Wwi Oal?

I've searched, and can't find this information anywhere.

Can anyone provide the cartridge overall length specification for German WWI military ammunition, both the truncated-cone and ogival types?

Thanks.

DWM's MINIMUM OAL for the round nosed bullet was the same as today's SAAMI MAXIMUM OAL of 1.169 inches, the principal reason for the Luger's less than shining reputation for reliability since ALL factory loads are below the original minimum OAL. (I'd like to know who the bright boy was who decided to shorten the cartridge.) I may have the specs for the truncated cone around somewhere, I'll have to look.

A couple of weeks ago, my gunsmith was cleaning out 30+ years of cartridges and gave me a 1917 DWM 9mm. ogive round. It measures 1.168 OAL and .75 case length. Ya gotta love Teutonic efficiency!h

DWM teen age Ammo

Dwight,

I have three different versions of DWM ammo from the teens.

The hollow point specimen dated 1913 measures 29.00mm end to end.

The flat top specimen dated 1915 measures 28.68mm end to end.

The round top specimen dated 1918 measures 29.55mm end to end.

I have 3 hollow points, 2 flat-tops, and 5 round top examples that I have pulled from my 9mm German selections.

Hi Dwight:

About a year or so ago, I measured the O.A.L. s and posted all of the pre WWII ammo that I had in my collection.

If you can find that thread, you will find the O.A.Ls of about 20 or so varieties of both German and American ammo from that period.

Good luck.

Sieger
