1917 Dwm
 

Hello , Picked up a 1917 DWM . It has DWM in script on the toggle and small mil proof type markings in various spots . It was imported ,rebuilt marked by miltech at some point . Are there any markings that I could look for that would tell what type of unit it went or anything else about its history ? Thanks - Mark

unit stamps are most often found on the front grip strap, unless its a navy model.
Are there any numbers or letters on the grip strap ?

Mark, as James said, unless marked on the gun, no, there is no way to tell from a serial number. A soldiers book might have the luger description in it, but unless it came with the luger, there is no chance in the world to find one with your exact serial number, suffix combination...

A full description for legal purposes of a luger is, as an example;

1917 DWM, sn 3456d

As every year they made many lugers and also made them sometimes with the same suffix...

The only marking that does not appear to be a mil proof is what looks like a small script h below the serial number above the front of the triggerguard . Nothing on gripstrap .

The script letter is part of the ser # .
Sometime the letter is hard to tell what it is, if you can post a pic, or if you to Tech info at the forum home page Ed has collected examples of the Letter suffixes that you can compare.
