Mauser Banner '42........??

Hi All,
It has been a while since my last visit as Luger collecting has had to take a back seat recently.........:(
I always check out what the dealers are offering though and this caught my eye......

http://www.deactivated-guns.co.uk/detail/police_PO8.htm

I have never seen one before and i cannot find one in Jan's book.
Has anyone seen one........?
Best regards,

Steve.

Makes me wanna cry when I see the deactivate word. Ya might as well say ya nutered em.

Steve,
You probably couldn't find one in Jan's books, because a 42 dated military Banner with E135 proofs didn't likely exist. There were military Banners in the 177Xx serial number range like this pistol, but they were proofed E655 and were not dated later than 41 to the best of my knowledge. I use Costanzo as a reference concerning Banner production and he indicates that there were not any Banners produced for the military in 1942. There are some for real Banner experts on this Forum and hopefully they will add to this post.

Lyn, I presume then, that later dated Banners were made solely for the police with sear safeties?

Lyn Islaub 02-04-2006 05:28 PM

That is my understanding. Both my 42 and 1942 chamber dated 'y' suffix Bannners are Police Eagle L's and the latest military pistols that I can find reference to were 41 dated 'x' suffix E655 marked and not E135 as in the picture Steve posted. If anyone has additional data in this area, I would be interested in the input.

Many thanks for all the input guys.
I see this pistol is now reserved. It looks like someone is going to pay £1200 for something that did not exist........:grr:

In my opinion the toggle has been changed on this pistol from a byf to a Banner toggle. The magazine rivots also look to have been messed with. --- Very, very few 42 two digits Banners have a sear safety or an Eagle L stamp, and they should be in the low 8000Y serial range. The 42 two digit Banners in the W block did not have either the Eagle L or the sear safety to my knowledge. They also had strawed small parts. Both 42 two digit variations are found with police marked 1 and 2 numbered magazines, so apparently they were self purchase guns for the police. --- Bill

Bill,
I'd agree about the toggle train swap and that would help explain the E135 proofs.
