Joe,

Welcome to the forum. That mark is for the Schutzpolizei (uniformed large-city police) of the city or governmental district of Bautzen in the state of Saxony. What makes you believe the pistol is a 1914 commercial? Most of the known Lugers with this marking were manufactured in the mid-1920s. If you would tell us the serial number and letter suffix on the pistol, it will help. I would also be interested in whether this Luger has/had a sear and/or magazine safety and any other markings (proofs, etc.) on the gun. Photos would be a huge help.

Don, I was told this had the marking on the grip,S.P. Bn 847, the fellow thought it was a 1914 commerical as no date is visible on the chamber, it does have a 7880m serial number on the bbl all matching with aluminum magazine wood bottom, also has stock lug intact. Approx bluing 80% no straw on the takedown lever or extractor. What would the value be on this luger? Thanks for you input.

Joe, we would need pictures, also need to know if all original and the exact model. Is the magazine matching?

I am thinking it is actually a 1920's era made for the police alphabet luger.

Value could be $600- and it could be $1300...

Joe,

This pistol was manufactured by DWM in 1924, probably as a .30 cal. commercial, and converted to 9 mm for police service. It is similar to other m-block DWMs that were purchased for the Bautzen Schupo. Does it have a sear safety?

Incidentally, is the mark S.P.Bn. or SP.Bn.?

I'm no expert on Luger values. I recently purchased DWM 8185m all matching marked SP.Bn.669. along with two matched mags and a very nice police holster for just under $1500. I don't know how to break out the gun alone.

the "collector" i am trying to purchase it from thinks its a 1914 and wants $1160. All the numbers match but the magazine does not have any dates or numbers on it. This would be my first luger purchase and I don't want to take home a 600 luger for $1160. Thank you Don and Ed. i have kenyon's lugers at random & the magazine resembles a 1902 cartridge counter on page 396 item 2. sorry no photos at the present time

the mark is SP. Bn 847

If it helps you, last month I bought a police marked, 1921 dated, matching mag 90%+ for $950, felt it was a good deal and worth up to $1,200 on a good day...but it will stay in my collection, willed upon my death to Ed...hope this helps

Joe, one more question. Has the weapon number been x'd out and replaced?

jdomin 02-01-2006 09:26 PM

no, x outs the numbers appear to be all original
