Type 26 & holster
 

I just got this pistol today along with a nice Japanese bayonet and Japanese carbine. I don't collect much Japanese, and was thinking this was the Type 94 when I got it as I have a Nambu and wanted a type 94 to go with it. I guess my question is did they use this type in WWII and does it have any value? The guy sold all three items really cheap as they were his brothers who died a few months ago. He had no use or attachment to them. Anyway, any advice or ideas on this pistol would be appreciated.

Dave, the type 26 was considered for all troops, then was replaced by the Nambu's.
It looks nice, if you are considering trading or selling, keep me in mind. Value, I think $400-$600, although they are 'rarer" than T14 nambu's or T94's (I have one of each), thye are not worth as much I believe, mainly because they have an obsolete cartridge.

type 26 was the first offical handgun made for the Japanese army, cartrideges are far rarer than the guns themselves.

Around 60,000 were made in the late 1880's. I am sure they were used in both wars, but it was not a primary weapon for many years, the Type 14 and then the Type 94 were the replacements.

Thanks for the info. It is such an ugly gun I wondered. I did get an excellent buy on it then.

Dave I sold an excellent one with a near mint holster last year for $550. Like most military it should be matched. Also 26's had some bright fire blued parts.

They were commonly carried by Japanese NCO's and lines of communication troops in the Pacific.

I'm pretty sure .38 S&W cases can be sized to fit the Type 26.
