7.62x25 luger priced good?
 

I found a luger at a local gun shop, it is in cal 7.62, and is in good shape, the mag is nazi marked. and not correct for the gun I think, the finish is original as far as I can tell, and the numbers match on the big items but some small parts have been replaced. the bore is good. and they are asking 695 for it. I think I may be able to talk them down to 599, any thoughts on a gun like this? btw, no chamber date and toggle is marked dwm.

From what I have seen this gun is priced a tad high. There are some things that go against it's value...

It's mismatched. That (almost always) means shooter value.

It's in 7.62, making it an expensive to shoot, shooter.

If it has a nice blue job - whether original or not - I'd give him $500 bucks for it, maybe $550 if it spoke to me.

Have you checked the auction sites lately? There might be one that you can get for less money, since this isn't an investment piece.

Now, all the information above is purely opinion - and the opinion of a relative novice to boot - and should be taken with one or more grains of salt. Not valid outside the US and Canada, all rights reserved, inspected USDA for brown spots and bad smells.

Steve is giving good advice. It sounds like a .30 Luger (7.65 Parabellum) commercial. These can be found in all matching decent condition for about what the shop is asking.

7.62 x 25 is .30 Mauser, an all together different cartridge, too long and too powerful for a Luger .

A mismatched commercial would only serve as a shooter. And has no investment value. As well as being expensive to shoot($35.00+ per 50 rds), unless you reload your own ammo.

For another $200 or so, you could find a decent low end collector or a nice 9mm shooter.

As Ron said, lugers are either 9mm or 7.65mm. A used 7.65mm would be cheaper than almost any 9mm luger's to buy, and you see barrels for them on e-bay and guns for sale here on the forum.

Mauser is 7.63mm, Luger is 7.65mm...don't know what a 7.62mm is.

Ammoguide.com lists a "7.62 x 25 Tokarev"

There's a character at GunsAmerica currently offering several Mauser Parabellums in 7.62 Luger. I offered a correction of the error, and he responded with an insult to my intelligence. I decided I don't need to talk to him again.

The dealer on Gunsamerica that is at the other end of the two links provided by Ponyman is certainly not knowledgeable about Lugers... Guns to him are a commodity... that is still no excuse for being rude...

Sorry, what I meant to say is that I want to convert my 1923 Luger back to its original 7.65 chambering.

The 7.65 is a great cartridge to shoot. If you can get either a 4.75 or 6" bbl, I would recomend one of those. I personally like the longer barrels. But, you will either need to find a good source of amunition or load your own. The ammo is hard to find and as noted, quite spendy. I have tried Fiochi and found that it did not cycle the action of any of mine.

I find a 6" in 7.65 a very nice gun to shoot.

SS109 et al, I have a few original NOS "Germany" marked Navy 7.65x150mm (6") barrels from the 1920s Pacific Arms Corp, available @$200 each + $10 S&H. These are the same exact ones that PAC would install back then upon request, so a righteous conversion for a collector grade gun. GPC has new 6" .30 luger barrels for around half that price for shooters, if you don't mind a barrel where the front sight base and extraction groove, don't line up properly. TH

Tom, just how much off are those GPC barrels on the front sight base/extractor notch alignment?

John, It seems to vary quite a bit from barrel to barrel. Usually, you can open up the extractor cut enough to compensate. Also plan on having to do a finally chamber ream, as most are short chambered. TH
