American Eagle Troubles?
 

American Eagle Question
Hello and thank you for letting me join this forum.
I am very new to collecting and will be very intersted in any ones help. My question now is this. I have an "American Eagle" that I am trying to trade and the potential trader has a concern. My Eagle has a loose safety lever. It will move with very little resistance. It doe snot flop, it is loose. When the pistol is cocked., the lever will still move but has resistance. Is this a real problem? I have fired this pistol just a few times and it is a remarkable pistol. Very accurate up to 30 yards. Any, does the potential have a real concern? Do I need to get this repaired because it is unsafe? Any one that can give me some help, please feel free to do so.

Mike, you are not too far fro me I'm in Springfield. I will take a look at it for you if you like. What are you trading for? It is probably a weak or partiall broken grip safety spring. I believe Tom Heller has these for sale.

Michael, In the past when I had these springs, I sold them for $25 each. Hopefully, the price will remain the same, depending on my next production cost. TH

What builder and year is your Eagle? Photos?

Can you be more specific about the lever - is it the grip safety lever on the backstrap, or the thumb safety lever on the left side of the frame?

Hi Mike ~

There is no spring to "tension" the thumb safety lever - resistance is provided by a small "bump" on the back (or inner) surface of the lever, which rides on the surface behind the lever and falls into the detents at the extremes of the lever travel. Cycling the safety lever thus results in an arc being scratched on the surface. It sounds like the "bump" on your lever was either worn down from excessive cycling or perhaps removed by a previous owner. Another possibility is that the lever is bent outward just a bit.

Thank you. The frame does not show a deep groove from excessive cycling. The "bump" seems to be in tact. It is possible that the lever is sprung. When the action is "cocked", the lever tightens up.

We never established what gun you have. Does it have a Grip Safety? Do you know who the builder is and approximately what year?

Are you still talking to the potential trader?
