Help: Unserialled fxo mags on byf 41
 

Hello All,

At what point in the serial range would a byf 41 P.08 have

come from the factory with unnumbered fxo plastic bottomed mags and what is the correct style WaA? Thanks in advance!

The plastic bottomed magazines are fxo type, with an acceptance mark of stick eagle 37. They started to be used in the middle of 1941 (June or July) and were issued first with Lugers around the Q-Block.

As Frank mentioned, I also always heard June of 1941 was when they were authorized. If you say the N block is Jan, then O block = Feb., P block = March, Q block = April, R block = May, S block = June, and T block = July.


I feel most of the byf's were issued matching aluminum based magazines through the U block and anything from the V block on was most likely issued either blank based aluminum based or black plastic blank bases.

Authorized in June of 1941, but didn't appear until later. That would make sense, since I have a 41 byf, R-Block with a matching magazine.

Yes, that is exactly what I am thinking also. There are lots of aluminium numbered magazines through the U block and then almost none after that. I think that could be correct -- authorized in June of 1941 and actually issued sometime later. Just based on information and observations. I also feel that a lot of these blank based magazines, both aluminium and black plastic (fxo's) are replacements and extra's.

I'm a long time and "serious" long arm collector and am going to breakdown and get that representative war date P.08 rig so as to have representatives of the 9mm German WW2 handguns. This info helps bigtime as I am sure the P.08 field is likely more treacherous and tricky than the 98k. I should buy stock in Dremel.

I have an fxo magazine that appears to be legitimate that has a 3524 no suffix base. If it is indeed legit, it must have been used in the very late 1941 or very early 1942 time-frame. After that it really is a question. I wonder if anyone on the Forum has a 42 byf with matching magazine in the later blocks?

I think the Luger collectors have as bad or worse time with fakery as the K98k collectors. The only thing we can do is buy as many books on the subject and read to learn what is real or possibly faked.


Good Luck on the P.08 that you will be buying and welcome to this site. We hope we can be of assistance to you with your questions.


P.S. - I like the K98k also and have several original pieces in 96-98% condition. One is a DOT 44 and the other is a byf 42. I also have one of the Yugo reworked K98k that is my favorite shooter piece.
