hey new guy, can't see your name to welcome you!

I moved your posting to the New collectors forum instead of the tech help section.

We would be glad to help you.

Ask questions.

Post pictures, tell us the serial number and the suffix, then we can help you :eek:

:)

As a novice collector myself, I can highly recommend looking through the Technical Information section of the site. I learned an awful lot in a very short period of time from this site (and I have barely scratched the surface of the information contained in here). You have stumbled into what may prove to be P-08 Nirvana. There are people here who have much to offer, it just takes a while to sort through all of it.

The best thing you can do is ask your immediate questions here in the New Collectors Forum, and someone will direct you to a thread or provide the answer you seek. Everyone I have come into contact with here has been very helpful and shown much patience with my ignorance.

Kevin, it is a "y"

there is a posting under technical information where i showed a large number of suffixes.

There are two ways to post, you can post one at a time and then answer your own thread (rather than starting a new one each time. If the subject is the same, it is best to keep it all in one thread).

2nd way is to look top right of the screen and it says Upload, you up-load one at a time and after each upload, drop mthe URL into the icon marked IMG (for image), and then you can post as many as you want.

Kevin,
* Yes. The "42" was the assigned code to Mauser in the years 1939-1940.
Respectfully,
Bob

This is my first and im hooked on luger. But I think that I gave to much for this gun it also did not come with a magazine

Edward Tinker 12-02-2005 09:53 PM

I merged all of the threads. you are welcome to start new threads, but if the same subject, it is best to keep them together.

The right hand proofs are eagle 655's, seen as E/655 many times. It is the proof and aceptance markings, as the gun went through acceptance, they were then struck with a marking, other time periods had different markings.

You can find "period" magazines here, on line, on e-bay etc.

Thanks Ed. How comon is my luger

Edward Tinker 12-02-2005 10:11 PM

let me look....

in Jan Still's Third Reich Lugers, it says there were 85,500 made, less than some years. Not "uncommon", except you have one and I don't!

Aren't these lugers great , except it will suck you in and you'll want another! :)

I'm going to a gun show Dec. 10, in Atlanta I would like to find a magazine and holster. the marking under the witness marks any ideas

RockinWR 12-02-2005 11:25 PM

Kevin,
* "Work completon/self inspection" marks of the craftsmen @ Mauser likely indicating completion of one or more sub tasks in the progressive manufacturing/assembly of your Luger.
* Unfortunately, the worker marks have not been identified/cataloged to the discreet tasks for which they were associated.
* The magazine you will be looking for will be a blue tube with a solid, single side pinned aluminum base plug. It should be marked with an E/655 to be period correct. Ideally, you will find one with the same style "y" block alpha character. A "+" mag base mark will indicate the reserve (spare) mag issued with an Army LUger. The primary (Main) mag will not have this "+" mark.
* Ideally, the holster will be dated 1939 or 1940 and will be maker marked although a 1940 holster with a 3 letter maker code & "P.08" marking wouldn't be entirely out of the question (just starting to get a little late for your late 1939 period piece.
* That being said, I wouldn't get too picky if you find a nice, solid PT.08 at a good price. It will just fit the next Luger you can pursue.
* Trust this helps.
Respectfully, Bob
