U-Boat Tour
 

Another site I found years ago that gives ya a virtual tour of the U-boat in Chicago.

My hat is off to all those that served in those boats on both sides you had big brass ones.

And to the guys that envisioned and built em WOW you were living on the edge, what a masterpiece.

When I was working in Bremerhaven, Germany, I went on a tour of a U-Boat, very tight, cramped quarters.

I crawled thru the U505 in Chicago when I was a kid. It would probably appear more cramped now as an adult. TH

I got to tour the USS Bowfin on a trip to Pearl Harbour. I couldn't believe just how small and cramped it was inside that thing, how they managed to live in one for weeks at a time is beyond me.

The Growler was our first nuclear missle capable sub. The sub itself was a diesel. To fire the Regulus missle, the ship needed to surface, roll out the missle, and fire it off the deck. Haven't we come a long way?

The Intrepid alone is an awesome museum, well worth the trip.

Maybe at the 2025 "World Peace Fair" we'll pay to be launched out of an Ohio class sub in a plexiglass missle... just for fun.

Okay... maybe not.

It's a new site that has Aerial photos from WWII that was formerly classified, It's still in the growing stages but should be pretty good in awhile.

A couple of years ago the Aus Navy sank an old warship off the WA coast as an artifical reef. Towed it out to the site and one of the Collins class boats stuck a fish into her as a training excercise. Big pictures in the paper at the time.

The an old submariner wrote to the letters column saying something like "good job lads, now try it whilst your target is doing 15 knots on twenty foot seas and dropping depth charges on you!"

What is not widely known is that in the Pacific, US submarines where often used to deliver Z Force operations. You think those old boats look cramped, add to the mix, the crew, all the crews gear and supplies, plus a dozen or so large Aussies and all their gear travelling somewhere with the intention of extreme mishief!

Now that's cramped!

Those Submariners deserve nothing but absolute respect.
