If any of you old ground pounders ever gets the chance to take a look at one of these beasts,jump on it. I was around M-60A1's at Ft Knox and the size of a Tiger was still impressive. Man that thing packed some armor! No wonder our guys had a healthy respect for them.

Very nice site indeed.
This isn't a tiger but it shows that some of these old warhorses are still out there. It was retreived from a Russian riverbed in the early 1990's. Take the Tiger tanks armor double it, then put it at an angle to make it even more resistant, and you have the King Tiger tank. It would be a monster even today!!!

Something about the Tiger 1's straight, block armor that is SO appealing. It has to be one of the most recognizable tanks of WWII. Thank goodness "Saving Private Ryan" got them almost right. The T-34 road wheels are kind of a give away though-but I'll say it is a darn good close look-a-like! The best repo's I've seen so far are the Panzers on "Band of Brothers". Now that was an eye for detail. Probably the worst was in the movie "Patton".

My father was in the infantry during WWII. When I was a kid he told me about a time during the "Bulge" his outfit was visited by a Tiger while they were holding a town. "When Tigers were coming the ground shook" he said. For some unknown reason the Tiger backed out of town after facing what little resistance his squad could muster. I asked him "Did you go after it and knock it out"?? His reply was "Are you kidding!! We were just glad to see it go...they could raise alot of hell with one of those things."
Not too long ago I began going through a shoe box full of letters he wrote while in the Army. In one of them he wrote of what I believe to be this very incident. I don't remember the exact quote, I think he wrote something along the lines of "THAT was a BIG tank". |

I recall seeing one of these or very similar in 1970 on the Golan Heights. Clearly a German tank, I believe the Tiger. It had a Russian engine and transmision. It had taken a bazooka in the rear, and the inside was hardly recognizeable as the inside of a tank.

I knew that Syria had several Mark IVs in there arsenal. Have never heard of any Tigers, however. I suppose it's possible, but they weren't very dependable mechanically. Probably why it had a Russian engine and transmission.

So far, the only ones close to the real thing in movies is "Kelly's Heros" and "Saving Private Ryan" (great, but still you can see the T-34 road wheels). The best Panzers have so far been in the series "Band of Brothers".
