Navy personnel in action

Hi,

I found an interesting detail in this 1941 photo, published in a Wehrmacht propaganda book.

It shows a boarding party entering an allied transport vessel. One of the men is appearing to carry a Navy or Artillery luger.

Gerben, Cool photo! I'll bet it's pretty rare. The pistol looks more like it might be a Mauser C96, but could be a Luger.

Great photo!

Good eye, Ron.

Hi Ron,

It's a pity the original isn't that sharp, but I think both of the men are carrying the same pistol. Look at the disc-shaped forms beneath their hands. I'd almost think they are trommel magazines :)

Hi Gerben,
Good point. I hadn't noticed that. It's too bad there isn't some way to have the photo enhanced, to show more definition. Still a really neat photo. I am intriged by high seas raiders. You can almost invision these men as Buccaneers.

Hi Ron,

I agree. But I think it may be just a 'replay' of an earlier raid. Don't think the German cameraman was the first member of the raiding party :D

It would make sense to have an autopistol with an enhanced magazine capacity on trips like these.

I'm not so sure. At the rate the ship is burning. They could be returning to their ship after searching or setting the blaze. One of the boarding party may have just taken the opportunity to snap a photo.

I would think that if it was staged. It would be much more dramatized. And a clearer photo of both sailors. It appears to be a spur of the moment snap-shot.

It could be a staged photo, but, if so, the photographer wasn't a pro apparently. Otherwise he wouldn't have let the lines obscure the second man's face.
