Arty rear sight finish
I just got the Arty that Tom Armstrong had for sale. Very nice, needs a good cleaning. I have the top end cleaned and I know that the rear sight scale should be in the white, but what about the fine tune sight blade?
It appears to have been finished the same as the scale but I'm not sure. There doesn't seem to be any bluing under the fine rust on it. Any ideas? |
No one has any clue?

The scale/shaft is in the white. The so called "slider" assembly is fire blued, the rest is rust blued. The fine-tune sight blade may be fire blued also.

JimD,
George is right about the fire blueing, but age and condition of the artillery may have dulled the fire blueing so that it looks like old rust blueing. Big Norm |
JimD,
George is right about the fire blueing, but age and condition of the artillery may have dulled the fire blueing so that it looks like old, dull, rust blueing. The front blade should have been fire blued and, if it is an adjustible front sight, the screw should also be fire blued. If your rear sight is adjustible, then that screw should also be fire blued. The grip screws, toogle hinge pin and all internal pins were also fire blued. The internal pins may not have been fire blued for appearance so much as to have been case hardened. Internal pins also includes the toogles connecting pin and the extractors pin. Big Norm |
Thanks for all the info guys. It helps a lot.
