RK, it's a super photo and I'm presently on top of it. Just a great early wartime photo of some mech troops.

RK, Great picture. I was wondering what the rectangular tins were on the left breast. Cleaning kits or flashlites?. I like the lanyard.

Nice, real photo, great seeing these soldiers in various dress and weapons.

Flashlights I believe. Very similar to those issued in the first war.

Pure guess on my part, but I'd suspect they are a recon group. The grenades appear to be props for the photo op. Officers rarely carry much less actually use grenades. Several have goggles and binoculars. None have rifles although several have ammo pouches. Rifles were most likely left in vehicles or on motorcycles. The architecture in background appears to be Slavic (onion dome), the flag staff on the tower is empty, my guess is that they just crossed the border into Poland and are posing in front of a government building. Also they have a smug, look what I just did look instead of the damn I'm tired of this here we go again look seen on later photos. There is no mud on the tires or their boots and uniforms, but they are wearing jackets and overcoats. There are also leaves on the branch to the right and on their helmets and none are wearing overcoats. That fits in the fall time period. They all look well fed, not gaunt and exhausted. No bayonets, they get in the way climbing in and out of vehicles and motorcycles. The luger lanyard is a bread bag strap. Looks short for the length of the arm of the soldier, bet its a posed item too.
