Howard, Is there an Umlaut over the U, as in S.Ã??P.I.55.R. ?

The gun, A C96, is on Simpson's "what's new" page, does not show the proof its self and the gun is a bit questionable in my opinion, and I am trying to talk myself out of it, but was interested in finding out about the proof....just got a Weimar police from Check Point Charlie and will try to post pictures....thanks for any help

This is probably a pre-1922 Schupo or Sipo mark but, without seeing a photo of the mark, I can't hazard a guess. Is it on the front of the grip strap or the front of the mag well?

The "R." represents precinct police (Revierhauptmannschaft or Revierpolizei) and may be a post-1922 addition to the mark.

I'll be interested in your posting of your new Weimar police (Luger?).

Don, sorry I as not clear, the new gun is a C-96, not Luger, Weimar police property stamped, not a cut barrel, matching numbers, far east?? dipped blue and I will post pictures as soon as I can, easer for me is to email them to you if you would send you address.....this is one reason it would be nice to have a Luger fest....I would bring my humble collection for you pleasure and I would hope to see what you have horded away :)...take a look at the Simpson broom and give me your opinion...not un-matched numbers, and not all numbers shown...

I looked at the Simpson posting and it doesn't say where the unit mark is located. I have seen them on the front grip strap and on the front of the mag well. The mag well location probably indicates an earlier mark.

I will go out on a limb: The mark may be "Op." and not "UP." I have found that most people are not that precise when reporting police marks. I have also seen an instance of an Op. mark that was reported as OP. because the lower-case p. was displaced upward and looked like an upper-case letter. If so, this mark is from the Prussian governmental district of Oppeln.

My real collection is my unit mark database. My Luger collection numbers only 3 but is about to jump to 5!

My money says it's a Truppen Ubungsplatz Reichswehr pistol. I think that they may have misread the marking.

Of course I am probably wrong and the money referred to above is only $2.00.

Truppen Ã??bungsplatz is a troop training center. A Boot Camp pistol, but the S shouldn't be there unless it is marked out of sequence. Then it could be Truppen Ã??bungplatz Senne 1st battalion waffe #55.

Don's translation sounds good too. It seems more probable that a C96 would be religated to a training unit. IMO.

For what it's worth, I have a record in my database of a C96 with the unit mark "S.Op.IV." There was no weapon number listed in my source; however, I believe this indicates C96s were used, at least during the early 1920s, by the Schupo in Oppeln.

Howard, buy the pistol and post some photos so we can solve the mystery.
