First luger

After getting a lot of input from you forum folks and some serious coaching from Brent B. I've landed a very nice DWM 1916 piece. Went the route of getting a matched piece instead of a 'shooter' but plan on taking this one to the range at least a few times. Waiting at this point for my new magazine to arrive

Does have some light rusting on it, esp on the left side. Noted on the 'repair' forum, that superfine (0000) steel wool and light oil seems to be recommended for that. Other suggestions?

Also the back of the toggle seems to have been scratched, but I'm a pleased first time buyer.

Thanks again for all of your help/comments/expertise.

Hi Tony,

It looks to be a very nice 1916. Congratulations! If you shoot it? Just be careful not to use high velocity ammo. Such as +P or any of the HV defense loads. Just shoot generic standard velocity round nose full metal jacket 115 - 124 gr. stuff. Winchester , S&B, PMC, American Eagle, etc.

HV ammo will beat it to death and break irreplacable parts.

nieuwkot, what was wrong with the magazine that came with the Luger?

nieuwkot 08-29-2005 11:05 AM

magazine

Mag that came with it was a non matching wood bottom one, with several hairline cracks in it. Instead of busting off the base, I'm taking the advice of a number of members to shoot it with one of the Mec-Gar mags.

As a new owner myself, I would have been very pleased had mine arrived in that condition. I think it looks fine and presents itself well. Did you see in person before buying? Did you know the seller? Just curious...Dave

Model 12, I think this was a gunbroker auction that nieuwkot was able to find.

I remember seeing it and thought it would be a nice Luger to bid on except for the shipping cost.

Since the bidding didn't go so high, nieuwkot got a good deal in spite of the higher than normal shipping. :)

For rust removal, I use 0000 steel wool and WD40 or Kroil, both have rust dissolving properties without harming the original bluing.

Yep, that was a GunBroker deal. As pointed out the Buy It now price, even with $40 shipping was a good price. Was getting frustrated at mis-matched 'shooters' even starting lowball in the auctions were pushing up over $600+ by the time they sold, so to get a matched piece for less than $800 seemed to be worth it.
Also spent some time with (0000) last night and am very pleased with the results. Should look good in the display box I'm working on......
