Dings near crown
 

This Luger has a nice crown over the N, but next to and under the N are 4 dings.

Any thoughts as to what these dings are for?

No real way to tell "fer sure", but one might reasonably surmise that they are artifacts from some crude metal hardness test. Such marks are frequently found on the top right of the toggle link on guns that were rearsenaled during their service life.

The Luger is a DWM commercial in .30 caliber. There's Crowns over N several places.


Is there a resource to determine the year manufactured by the serial number?

Yes, there is, kind of. Jan Still's book "Weimar Lugers" has a good production timeline for Alphabet Commercials, that is, .30 Commercial Lugers with a 4-digit/letter suffix serial number on the frame.

There is no good published source to tell you this in the 5-digit commercial series, but if you post the gun's serial number someone may be able to help you out.

The serial number is 9983 on the underside of the barrel and there is what looks like a small case "n" underneath of it.

According to Still's chart, this Luger was manufactured around the middle of 1924.
