There is no documented evidence of a German soldier EVER having a leather drum pouch. They were made of canvas and carried upside down so the drum was easily removed. The leathers were made after the war.

Actually they were carried attached to the belt horizontally. It does not make sense to have that damned thing swinging and banging around in a combat situation. The manuals' published illustrations are pretty typical of what a "rear echelon" would depict for convenience of illustrating use.
