Dumb Question II
 

Hi:

How many have noticed that the magazines of most Lugers (even with original mags,) hang out about 2 to 3 millimeters from the base of the pistol?

Does anyone know why this amount of "slack" was built into the design?

Even Lugers in mint condition seem to suffer from this malady.

i hve noticed this on my only Luger, my pristine DWM 1914........if i hold the mag up into the well, it will lock the toggle every time......

If i don't, the toggle locking back is a very iffy proposition.........

Originally I thought my magazine may have been worn, or better yet, the little part that holds the magazine in the Luger may have been worn, but this doesn't seem to be the case.

My 1917 DWM does experience this to a greater extent than my 1941 byf. The byf is a Norwegian capture pistol that was never used in combat (or used very lightly), so its parts shouldn't be worn at all.

I've never experienced hold open problems because of this little "problem", but it only makes common sense that a sloppy fit magazine could cause this problem.

Sieger,

The extra "slack" you describe is intentional. It is there to ensure that the magazines always latch when inserted into the magazine well. My great, great uncle Georg Luger told me this when I was just a boy.

This "hang out" does detract from the appearance of the Luger. It appears that the magazine is about to fall out, while everything else on the Luger looks to fit with great precision.
