Pete,

Any guesses on why the stock slot has been ground on? Have any of you guys seen that before? I'm new at this but I tell you, all these oddities on these Lugers sure sparks a guys curiosity.

Steve,

At one time in the US it was illegal to attach a shoulder stock to any pistol. Quite a few people understood this to mean that the stock attachment point itself--the stock lug--was illegal, and so had the stock lugs ground from their Lugers. This was a misunderstanding of the law, and eventually the ATF permitted -specific- varieties of Luger stocks to be attached to -specific- varieties of Luger pistols (perform a search, there are many discussions in these Forums on the subject), but by then the damage had been done and many otherwise collection-worthy Lugers have been ruined.

It is particularly unfortunate that the stock lug has been ground from the Artillery Luger which started this discussion, as this is a variation to which it is legal to attach an Artillery-style stock; so the value of this pistol, even (and particularly) as a Luger for shooting, is further reduced.

Dwight,

Thank you. Sorry, but I just now saw your reply.

While this gun will never be truely collectible, the shortcoming of the missing stock lug is a repairable deficiency... The only question is whether or not the cost is worth it to the owner... You can have a stock lug "transplanted" from a scrap Luger frame, and have the frame refinished just to make it functional as an Artillery model...

John,

That might have been a fun project. You're right. It's all about money. Whenever I think of a "project", I go to the collection pictures and say "No, I want one like that" :)

Or even easier. Just add a period correct frame :)
