These were used as training rifles, and to learn the HJ-boys to operate a K98, so they would be used to the rifle when they were ready to serve as cannon fodder.

Depending on maker and condition they are worth about a grand. I sold one last summer that was in 98% condition with sling, manufactured by Gustloff (formerly Simson). I got $1200 from a dealer for it.

Gustloff points to 'Wilhelm Gustloff'. Leader of the Swiss nazi-party who was assasinated in the mid 30's by a Jewish student. An organization inherited his name and the famous holiday ship, later hospital ship 'Wilhem Gustloff' was named after him.

Several (Jewish) companies were taken over by the German government in the late 1930's and were placed under control of the "Wilhelm Gustloff Stiftung" (foundation), including Simson.

I once owned a Anschutz in 22 that was almost identical to a k98. It had a cleaning rod. The whole thing was scaled down smaller.

When Simson & Co. was â??nationalizedâ?� by the Nazis, it was renamed Berlin-Suhler-Waffen. After Gustloff was assassinated in 1936, the name was changed to Gustloff-Werke in 1939 to honor him. Gustloff-Werke made a relatively rare auto pistol. There is a great writeup on Bob Adamâ??s website in the â??Collectors Gallery (Rare & Unusual Guns)â?� sectionâ?¦well worth reading.

The Gustloff "KK Wehrsportgewehr" a.k.a. KKW had a cleaning rod, but thinner in dia. or different in thread than the standard K98k's.
To follow up on the Simson/BSW/Gustloff history, it became "VEB Ernst Th�¤lmann Werke" in the GDR.

Rick, I have a photo of an SA cartouched Gustloff that belongs to a friend. Ed usually helps with my photos so I will email it to him. Also a note, the are not 98Ks but KKWs, Klein Kaliber Wehrsportgewehren.

This board has a lot of information on the DSM 34's and the KKW's. I love these rifles. They are extremely well made and very accurate. They are inexpensive to shoot and don't make much noise.

I have only now looked at the prices for the other ones - simply crazy.
I bought a 1908 DWM Brasil Mauser, 7x57, complete with matching bayo & sheath, sling, muzzle protector and the original proof firing target dtd. April 12, 1912 at EUR 700 just a year ago.
Top notch piece, never issued.
