1914 Commercial

1 Attachment(s)
1914 Commercial, serial #72353. Has both commercial and military serial number placement. Has circle S on left receiver behind the horizontal C/N. Does not have a sear safety. Number 2132 has been X'ed out on the rear above the lanyard loop. 1920 permissive stamp on top of receiver. Gun is all matching in 75-80% condition. Was brought back from Germany by my wife's father during WWII. Interesting luger. Any comments on circle S, etc.?

Bill, yes I do... Is the circle S actually on the left of the receiver? Can we see multiple pictures? As you can see, I collect stories of bring-backs, eventually put them in a book, I'd like to use this and pictures of the luger if possible? Where it was found/captured/taken, units dad was in etc. :)

Is it dated 1914, or are you using the "old" designation of 1914 model? As the serial number is higher than 1914 if I remember correctly...

Ed, I don't know how to post multiple pictures. Help!

Ed - Sorry, I don't know my right from my left. It IS on the left side of the receiver by the crown N. By serial number it is a 1914 commercial. It has a 1920 permissive stamp on the receiver. It's fine with me if you want to use the pictures and info. All we know is that he was a warrant officer in France and Germany during WWII, and he passed away in 1965.

According to Still, the observed serial number range of the 1914 Commercial extends to 74275, so Bill's Luger is well within the known range. A 1914 Commercial should also have the unrelieved sear bar, unlike the Basil Police and later 5-digit commericals made in the 20's that have the relieved 1916 patent type sear bar. Obviously, this Luger has had the sear bar modified or replaced.

Ed .I have a 1920 German police with matching tool, and holster. It has capture papers from June 1945. Are you interested in anything like this for your book? The grip strap is SD marked for police.

Ed - I guess I'll have to email these pictures to you, but your profile says that you don't accept emails. Is there another way to get them to you through the forum?

Bill, According to Costanzo, your S in a circle indicates an early Simson rework. With the 1920 on the chamber, it was in military inventory then. TH

I have a very similar Luger. Mine is a Basel Police, serial number 75690, has a 1920 chamber date and the Circle S on the left receiver. This Luger is marked 648 below the lanyard loop and has a sear safety, and has had the slot filled in for the magazine safety. Also has two matching magazines, one a Hanael, and the other an aluminum bottom with a Hanael dove on the base. Has a blank loading tool and a 1933 police holster. I'm thinking of selling this piece if anyone is interested. -- Bill
