quick artillery price check please

I've been offered a mainly matching 1915 DWM artillery for $925. Good bore.

The downside is it's refinished, the proofs are gone from the cannon and the number is barely visible on the sideplate and others are definitely faint, but the work has been done quite well with the minimum of rounding and the strawing looks good. The grips are a little dubious and the spring under the rear site is broken.

I suspect this may be at the top of the price range for a shooter, but I don't see too many.

Any comments much appreciated as the seller is pressuring me for a decision and I'm tempted. I can't really afford it and will have to sell a few guns to finance it, but I've always wanted an artillery !

thanks, Stu

Well, acted rashly and bought - err in haste, repent at leisure !

This is just my opinion but I would pass at that price. I've seen nice , (not perfect) matching ones go for a little over $1300. This one will not increase in value like an unmessed with one will. And maybe i'm reading more into your words than is there. But I don't think you will ever be completly happy with this one.

Hi Pipeman. thanks for the comments, I suspect you're right.

I just can't bring myself to shoot original matching guns, even the 'less than collector' grade. I see them as a finite resource I'd hate to damage. Just a personal thing, you understand.

I've ended up trading a couple of nice guns for just that reason.

I'm buying this to shoot without guilt. They seem scarce in my area, which adds a little frustration to the search.

I suspect I'll re-spring this one, shoot it, sell it on at a huge loss and castigate myself for months :)

20 years ago I could of blamed it on the folly of youth, now I'll have to find a better justification ;)

Well then. If thats the case buy it shoot it and enjoy it. I see you found that the secret to my success is to buy high, and sell low!

Quite, you're giving our strategy away !

Stu, It's difficult to value such a purchase without actually seeing the luger, but from what I've seen lately, your cost is probably in the lower end of the going range. I do have one orig flat LPO8 rear sight spring left in stock @$25. TH

Thanks Tom. Please put me down for the spring and remind me how & where to send the money.

Thanks, Stu
