Chance to buy a luger
 

I have a chance to but a 42 Mauser with a 41 on the breach.

Serial numer is 2958KU and has original holster.

It is in very good condition but the magazines do not match.

Is this a desirable model and how much should I pay.

Nobody is going to go out on a limb, without some photos and/or a better description. Your "very good condition" , could be someone elses average condition. KÃ?? Lugers especially are up in the air as to value. It is speculation as to why they are marked KÃ??.

Many think they were issued to the Luftwaffe. Or the Coastal Flying Service. Some think they were made up from parts.

They are highly desirable to some collectors. And you could'nt give one to others. They are kind of in the grey area. Value could range from $800 to $2500 + roughly. Depending on the condition, etc.

Try to get some photos posted and a thorough description of the markings, etc.

That seems to be the concensess of the information I have read.
No one seems to know what the KU really means.
I can't get pictures because I don't own the pistol, it was left to a friend when their father died.

What kind of a price can you pick it up for?

The most important part of a KU is the vintage/story/background information. Try to get as much of it as you can.

Questions to ask:
-Where did it come from (deh, Germany. But whereabouts :) ).
-Where was the father stationed.
-How did he get it.
-Does it has capture papers.

That information is invaluable and far exceeds the value of the pistol.

Gerben, I like your thought process and agree with you totally. If one can tack some of these KUs down to an area of capture, at least the questionable "coastal flying" thing can be put to rest.

I believe they are simply parts guns put together by some small "jobber" or contractor.

Is $1100 with the holster to much to pay?

Is it worth it to you, i.e. if you pay too much, will it cause divorce, a shotgun blast to your left foot, your uncle guido visiting you because the spouse is mad, then no, don't buy it...

shooter price of a luger is $500-$600, holster can be worth $50-$175, all depends on condition and how much it is worth to you.

non shooter price, goes up several hundred, all depending on... condition of the gun and if all matching.

Stories or conjecture is worth nothing, unless you beleive it...

The fellows would need a lot more info or even better a lot of good pics to place a price on that pistol. It could be a steal at that price, but it depends on condition of holster,do all the numbers match on the pistol, condition of the pistol and blue,has it been re-blued, and last but MOST IMPORTANT overall condition. See where this is going?

Holster is in good sound condition with all leather and stiching intact.
It has several scratches on surface, take down tool and holder in place.
Pistol retains most of original blueing with straw showing on a couple of parts. Grips show little wear and are wood. All numbers match except mags
which have metal grasp pulls. Fit and finish are tight and there is no pitting.
I am not planning on shooting this pistol.

I have tried to describe this Luger the best I can from memory.
The holster is a hard shell redish brown leather marked 1939, I did not note manufacturer. Pictures tell a thousand words but are not available.
The pistol is in very good condition.

It sound allright. Be sure to get any documentation/story with it and report back here if you decide to purchase it.

ps: George. I agree. I'm still putting my money on pre-1945 Eastern-European and more exactly Hungarian use.

If this pistol has straw on the small parts, I don't believe that it would be correct. Small strawed parts were phased out in early 1937. Unless it happens to be a Commercial Banner, then it is possible to have the strawed parts. Don't think you will find them on 42/41 KU.
