Markings on a 1911 DWM

I came across this 1911 DWM the other day - can anybody help identify the markings? Thanks!

Bavarian 8th Regiment, 5th Company.

Does it havea hold-open? Aparently Bavarian guns are more likely to not have one.

Thanks George, a nice piece of information. I'm still curious about the markings on the frame, I cannot find them in Davis' "The Luger Handbook" which, unfortunately, is the only Luger reference book I have right now.

Claven2, my gun does not have a hold-open function, there's not even a cut-out in the frame for one.

Is this a regular P-08 made in 1911? If not, what is it?

Looks like a regular P-08 made in 1911 to me. The receiver marks are known examples of inspectors marks and Army acceptance.

Shortly before WW1 started, all P08 Lugers without hold opens were ordered upgraded to the hold open standard. Due to delays in Bavaria trying to get permission to obtain tooling and do the conversion in Bavaria, and due to the entire production volume of DWM and Erfurt being taxed to supply the Army, many of the Bavarian Lugers did not get upgraded before the start of hostilities, while most Lugers in other parts of Germany did undergo conversion.

Today, finding Lugers that don't even have the hold open milling is an uncommon occurence. I don't know if it's rare, exactly, but certainly it's outside the norm. Most often these hold-opnless Lugers turn out to have Bavarian ties.

Thanks, I noticed - which is part of the reason why I wanted to focus on one board. I hope this is not interpreted in a bad way, I just wanted to try and keep the discussion on one board.

My advice is to throw the Aaron Davis book away... it is almost worthless to collectors because of errors. I tossed mine out several years ago.
