Iron Cross ?? WW1
 

I figure Ron will know, but anyone?


I came across this at an antique shop, paid less than $20, so if a repro, not out much.


Went on-line, it said that generally repro's are NOT iron in the middle and thus are alloy and a magnet will not stick. A magnet sticks in mine, so...

It looks good to me. A couple of quick checks. You should be able to stick a weak magnet to the center but not to the silver rim (if it sticks to the rim, its plated). Hold the top ring so it doesn't rattle and shake the piece being careful not to hold the center section. If it is two-piece, as it should be, it probably will rattle. First time I did that when a guy was trying to sell me one he thought I was crazy (happy ending...it was a good one and I bought it).

I would say it doesn't stick to the rim, a weaker magent did not, a stronger one did, but not as much as to the interior part of it.

It does make a funny "rattle" like you said. Interesting. Sounds like my $17 plus tax was reasonable. Will look good on the wall, and I am glad it is probably real, slowly fading out anything that is repro from the house.

With a strong magnet, it will overcome the layer of silver and be attracted to the iron center. That is why you need to use a weak magnet.

I think the rattle is a bad sign. It is probably ready to blow. However since you are such a nice guy and dedicated forum monitor I willing to give you a chance to get you money back by sending the rattley old thing to me. :-)

Absolutely correct. Rust is quite evident at edges of iron core. Some rattle and others just roll. My 1813s and 1870s rattle but only a few of my 14s do. High quality of detail on crowns used to be the assurance of originality but even that is now overcome by some of the eastern european counterfieters.

Looks good there Ed. Great find. Are the medals typically dated with the year they were awarded?

Also thanks to Ron and George, I have never known how to identify an original so always passed them up.

All WWI have the 1914 date. WWII have the 1939 date.

At http://my.qxl.no/default/defaultlist...ingsort=0&9152 some iron cross can be found, both original and repro. The site is something like e-bay, just smaller.

I do put them away when I go away.... But what Tac means, is that us guys in Amerika can actually do this!

BTW; I have brass hooks, and there is surgical tubing over the hook, so nothing touches metal :)

Mr. Kane, How was your winter retreat? Did you really eat seals and birds and ward off polar bears and the like? I looked up the island and it looked wonderful. I could not read the language. Hope you had a great time!

Thanks! Things are great over here! It's nice to get away from the everyday rutines, to have time to reflect over things:) Just over three months left, and it's time to return to work back home :rolleyes: Got internet in my cabin with the help of my portable computer and cellphone.. trough bluetooth I think. I friend here helped me out, so that I can check out the lugerforum and mail from time to time:) I hunt every day.. mostly seals, as there is not so many birds as I tought.
btw. With the good help of a fellow forum member, I have now put together a shooter Luger, so that I got something new to play with if I get bored;) Only missing extractor and fireing pin-unit.. anyone with extra?:confused:

My cabin was realy bad when I first got here.. it had been standing for several years without use. But now I have covered most of the inside (and outside) with skinn, so now things are very good now:)

Stories.. hmm.. last week I was out checking what we call "snare", I quess the english word would be "trap" or something.. It's a thin wire shaped into a circle just a few cm over the snow, when a bird get it's head into the circle.. it's bird on the menu;) Anyway, when I was returning to the cabin, I saw a polar bear walking towards my cabin. I had stored most of my food high up, but that day there was a lot of birds and seals hanging outside my cabin.. A guy that that lives a few km away, sometimes uses my cabin to make his coffe and eat his lunch when out hunting. It's great to have a visitor sometimes, but now I wasn't 100% sure he was in there or not..
So when the bear was about 100m away from the cabin, I fired a few rounds in the air. But by then the bear had smelled the meat and was realy up for a snack.. I was standing about 400m away from the cabin, my only hope was that when the bear got 50m away from the cabin, a flare would go off. For safety I have a thin wire connected to a flares that go off with a bang and light. The flare went off, and the bear turned and run 50m away.. there it stopped.. I didn't want to shoot it, specially since it wasn't going after me, but my food. So I started shooting in the snow about a 1m in front of the bear. After 10 rounds the bear ran away.. It's common to see bears here, but this was the first time I had to make one run away, so it was quite a adrenaline rush for me;)

Wow! Beats the heck out of the exciting threat of my dog eating the ear off the stuffed monkey (which, by the whey, I had grown attachted to). That was a great story. Got any more? I was in northern Norway back in the early 80's:eek: The funny thing was. We did cold weather training in Minasota. And it was colder there than in Norway.:cool: Try and stay warm.
