Rusted helmet and pistol

"Fresh from the earth from the German attack on Russia. An acquaintance dug this up last year. Located it with a metal detector. This is rarely found. Nothing else could could be used from the grave, bones and the like. For collectors this is a lifetime rarity. Condition is very rusty, helmet has a small break, pistol is not complete."

1. Story doesn't figure unless it was a capture situation. I've read where the bolts would be removed from rifles, Mgs ect and thrown away. The fastest way to render a pistol useles is to seperate upper & lower and toss.

2. The pistol seems to be in less rusted condition than the helmet. And regardless of the type of pistol (unless a P08) the grips in some form would be present as would other hardware. Looks to me someone has made an attempt to clean it up and has removed the external parts.

3. The magazine release push through on the right side indicates to me its not a P38, maybe a HP , .45 or Radom?

This is just in case someone has a unit marked gun that matches the unit referenced in the photo. (RJB8)

Pistol frame is a totally stripped Colt type 1911.

That's a Colt 1911 frame. Odd that just a frame would be buried with a German helmet. Smells funny to me.

The frame is a Colt 1911 frame with all the internal parts removed. In it's current condition, the serial number should still be legible......

I sent him an email asking for the serial #.

I don't think they were buried together at all, the pistol frame is in much better condition that the helmet. If the frame did originate somewhere among german relics in Russia, then it's more likely to be a Norwegian M/1914 frame. These were copies of the M1911 Colt made for the Norwegian forces at Konsberg. Production had ceased by the time of the german occupation but was restarted by them.

If I can find the reference I'll let you all know the designation for this pistol the Germans used.
