Navy mag question

From the photos of the navy mags I've seen it appears that the wood bottom has rings - is this correct? Also, I was going over all of the mags that I have and only one has the rings and it also has the s/n 5821 stamped on the bottom with a crown over an M like the photos I've seen but there is another number stamped on the back/flat side of the mag itself - 1850 Any thoughts on what the 1850 might stand for? There are no other markings.

Brent,

You have an Imperial German Navy magazine; the 1850 on the spine indicates it was associated with a weapon with property number 1850.

Tom A.: Thanks for the quick reply. I found the navy mag in my 1916 Erfurt and a couple of months ago picked up a 1908 Navy Luger so I'll just put the mag with it even though it doesn't match the s/n.

Brent,

It is unusual to have a Luger with a matching mag; a Navy with a matching mag is, dare I say, rare.

I have been extremely fortunate in that I have a small group of imperial, weimar and III reich navies with matching mags. I consider my self truly blessed to have a complete 1917 Navy rig with all 3 original matching mags. Pics of it are posted in the members gallery.

Tom: I'll take a look at your photos a little later this afternoon as I'm getting ready to leave for appointments. Indeed, you are very fortunate to have 3 matching mags. I've only been collecting Lugers a little over 3 years and now have 28, mainly W.W. 1 and the navy I recently acquired was the first one I'd seen in person and I was really tickled to get it. Of all my Lugers I have one with 2 matching mags and another with 1. Even though my navy mag doesn't match it's still nice to see with the pistol. Thanks, Brent
