DAVID JACKSON-Blued Muzzles

Thought I would start another string although this is actually part of the American Handgunner story on collecting Military Mausers. Mr Lafferty reports that Mauser left the muzzles UNPOLISHED and BLUE on those Lugers made after they switched to salt bluing during 1937. This was a very long talked about subject a year or so ago and I thought I would relay Mr Lafferty's opinion! I believe he was a respected authority on the subject! David Jackson was extremely interested in this subject and we asked a lot of people about it! Thor

Ted,

I feel he is correct about the muzzles not being polished. If you look closely at the muzzles, you can still see remnants of the bluing aound the outer edges in a random pattern. The muzzle blast removes the blue real quick! I still think the poloshed crowns are really pretty.

Hi Ted and Marvin! Thanks for your email Ted; and your posts Ted and Marvin. The gun which brought all this on is a 1939 Mauser marked "42" on the toggle (code, not date). I believe this piece to be unfired. (Actually, from various articles I have seen that is not completely implausible; unfired late guns are not found every day but do turn up). The muzzle end is definitely blue. I would also say some effort has been made to polish it as well (before the blueing was done). There is no roughness on the muzzle end crown; it is possible the barrel is more smoothly polished on the sides, but if so, not much. In simple words, the end of this barrel is polished then blued, in my opinion.
