Police trade in 1920's S&W
 

I bought a 1905 M&P fourth change hand Ejector .38 special(long name) from a fellow that said it came in with a bunch of police trade-in S&W 10's and Ruger Service-Six's last year. He bought it because it was a 6" barrel and older than dirt. I looked up the serial # and it dates to about 1922! Long run of service for an old revolver. I took it apart and cleaned a pile of crud and dirt out of the mechanism. Mechanicly fine shape, good bore, original grips(worn pretty smooth), shoots accurate, not much blue left, interesting to see the wear on the muzzle from 80 years in the holster. Cool old gun!

Stevie, I love those old S&Ws. They've got alot of character. I've had several over the years. You'er probably aware of this but some people are'nt. Don't ever shoot anything ,but standard velocity ammo. +P ammo will beat them to death. And in the right instance, could be catastrophic. They'er old and fragile, compared to todays standards.

Oh, I know. I'm just a sucker for cool, old firearms! If I need to shoot +P+ .38 Special; I think I will substitute 7.62x51mm NATO instead. Next to 12ga. slug or buckshot, and with respect to the .458 Win. mag, I will put my money in between, with the mighty fourteen.

Stevie, Speaking of the .458 Win. This is one of my favorite rifles. A Custom .458 American built on a rare Ruger "flat bolt" short action. With a Burris 4X compact scope, with custom order German post reticle. It will shoot 3/4" cloverleaf groups all day long. A great Elk rifle. Ron

I always heard the .458 was an accurate cartridge. I like it, it's a little big in the bore for my tastes(developing a flinch just thinking about it). I don't hunt as much as I used to, but I use a Remington 700 ADL synthetic .30-06 with a Leupold vari-x III 4-12( scope cost $80 more than the gun). Not too fancy but a hard to beat combo. I've been collecting old milsurp bolt rifles, and have found not one that was not capable of fine accuracy. I got me a nice M38 Russian coming that I intend to use as a hunting rifle(I hope it's as nice as the E-pics show). By the way, I do also like your 1920/21 Police Luger. My old 1920 DWM shares the same Wiemer doves proofs and the same barrel proof as yours. Plus a couple of stick eagle proofs. I figure it's military issue because of it's rough condition and the extra eagle proofs.

Thanks, It's usually the first one I pick-up, when I get the urge to handle one of them. It's kind of interesting that as identicle as Lugers look, they feel different in your hand. My '20/'21 just feels like it was made for me. Plus it has alot of character.Kind of ironic that I went 800 mi to Reno just to buy it from a guy that lives about 10 mi from me. And I've known him for years. Did'nt know he had any Lugers. He's mainly a S&W and Marlin collector.
The 458 American is a 458 Win case shorted 1/2" so it will cycle in a short action. A 45-70 on steroids. It will thump you pretty good, but nothing painfull.I'm not a magnum fan, but I love 45-70. And this is just a belted 45-70.
