Translation German to English
Sorry about the OFF-TOPIC posting, this has nothing to do with guns
I am looking for someone who is willing to translate German to English. I have about 60 pages on MS word documents that are memoirs of Lt. Dose commander of the 187 Infantrie Regiment from 1915 â?? 1918. The documents were made by Lt. Doseâ??s son and sent to me. My Grandfatherâ??s brother served with the 187th and was KIA in Romania in 1916. I would like to get the documents translated for our family history. I am willing to pay someone for their troubles. Send me a pm jamesegg@bellsouth.net Thanks Jim |
Jim, look at babble.com ( or something like that) it is a free internet translation tool. Next, pay some kid $5 per hour to type your document in.
It will promptly spit out a translation however it will need some cleaning up. Good luck. |
Here you go Jim - try this link...
http://babelfish.altavista.com/tr My advice is to open a new MS Word Document and create a two column table. Then capture the original German text in manageable chunks and paste the chunks of German text into individual cells of the table on the left side and also feed the same chunks to this translator and then take the translation text and paste it into the appropriate right column cell of the table. The translation won't be perfect (as nothing is) but I have found that enough of the thought process behind the original text will usually become clear with a little study... and then you can add a third column and place in it your best guess as to what the Standard english might be... Sounds like a fun project... Let us know how it works out... better yet, how about posting the results as a document for download for those interested? Need any help? Just ask. |
Thanks for the replys,
I know about Babelfish and the translation is fair. It works fine for short sentences, but when a document has expressions and ideas or thoughts, the translation process breaks down and you can miss the whole intent of what is being conveyed. I was thinking maybe one of our German Members wanted a little spending money and at the same time help out another member. Thanks for the ideas Jim |
Jim,
Contact me if you can't find anyone. I've translated tech German to English for our oldtimer club many times in the past. I can even translate it to Dutch for you, but I doubt it will be of much use <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" /> Gerben |
