Brass Jackets
 

I bought a couple of boxes of Winchester 9mm at Walmart that I hadn't seen before -- a 100 round "brick" of 115 gr. FMJ for $11.00. They still carried the 50 round boxes of 115 gr FMJ for $6.00. The brick ammo shoots great and appears to be same, except that its BRASS jacketed instead of copper. Guys, what do you think? Is brass harder on a bore? Thanks.

I shoot Golden Sabers and they shoot and feed great, but dont know about what they do to the bore. These are Remington's brass jacket product Good question. Thor

Brass is a softer material then the steel bore - should be no problem. The brass is the sacrificial member here.

Where 9mm is the most manufactured round, the 30 Luger is probaby one of the least made! Pity, it is a real pleasure to fire and accurate! I gotta load those snail rat loads that Hugh sugguested and go pop some jugs with them. 60 gr Gold Dots sized to .3095" at warp speed! Hey Hugh have you chronied these yet? Thor

I don't think the jacket is brass.

It is just an alloy of copper that looks like brass, but it isn't brass.

Brass Jacketed ammo falls into the category of armor piercing pistol ammo.


Do you remember the infamous "cop-killer" ammo?

It was a brass jacketed, teflon coated ball ammo that zipped right through soft body ammo. It was never available to the public, but it did result in laws controlling bullet jacket material..i.e. no brass or steel jacket pistol ammo allowed.

Interesting comments, thanks! I have done some tests on 124 gr Remington Golden sabers and they tended to open almost as fast as a 115 gr Winchester Silver Tip. Does that one have an aluminum jacket? Thor

I have no idea about what is available in the States - but whatever the colour, it�´s nearly always plated tombac (this is what cheap jewelry is often made of) here. Patrick

Patrick, if that is the case, you should be able to SCRATCH through the coating/plating on Silvertips (suppose to be an aluminum jacket) and Golden Sabers (suppose to be brass) and come up with the same color underneath? What color should it be if it is the material you speak off? Danke! Thor

It should be silverish. The best way to check is with a magnet. I�´ve never seen a brass or steel pistol jacket. Fancy jackets are only permitted for the military in Europe.
