I just purchase my first luger. It is a S42 "G" matching

numbers except for the mag. The finish is about 90%+ The grips are brown plastic. Serial number is 65xx. bore is excellent. Looking at this site's technical information

(proofs) the gun was made in 1935. The proofs are three in a line:

1. the eagle with 63 below it, 2. "S" or "5" 92, and 3. is a proof that looks like a fan inverted. What do proof 2 and 3 mean? Thanks

Re: new owner of S42

Simply put:

Number 1 and Number 2 are German Military acceptance stamps, meaning they were found acceptable by and for the German Army. Number 3 is the test proof, which means it was tested and found satisfactory.

There are six variations of the G-date acceptance proofs.

They are, in order: -- B/90-S/91, --- B/90 -S/92, W/154-S/92,--211 - S/92, 63-S/92, and 63-63. Your gun is usually found in the D block.

Your gun should have wood grips and not brown plastic.
