Welcome to the Luger Forum!


Thatâ??s a very nice Dutch Luger you have there. That it is also a family heirloom makes it even better! I cannot help as to the year it may have been made without going through my reference books, but Iâ??m sure someone on the forum will be able to give you an approximate date off the top of their head.


The original holster was leather, and had compartments for the loading tool and a cleaning rod. Alas, leather holsters intended for use in the relatively dry and cold climate of Northern Europe do not do well in the heat and humidity common in Indonesia, and they quickly rotted. The canvas holster is a replacement, and one better suited to the climate of Indonesia.


The â??49â?� numbers you see are likely the last two digits of the serial number. Lugers typically had most parts numbered to the pistol, and you can seen examples of this in the Lugers under the â??Ownersâ?? Cornerâ?�, and â??Kyrieâ?�.


Lastly, the brass plaque with the legend â??Dept M 54â?� is a property marking. At some point in its service life this pistol belonged to a â??Department Mâ?�, and was likely the 54th pistol that department carried on its books as its property. Iâ??m afraid I have not a clue as to what Department M may have been.

According to "The Dutch Luger" pages 178-180 your "Dep.M" marking is most likely the Depot company of the southern & eastern Borneo, Garrison Battalion.
