New GNR Rig.
 

After two years work I have finally today put my prize GNR Portuguese rig together.
This whole idea came about when I found a GNR 1936 Mag pouch at a local gun auction.

The Holster was next, found at the SAR show last December in Phoenix.(Courtesy of Tom Nelson)and was complete with the oil bottle/cleaning rod and the correct stripping tool
Next shot is the reverse side showning the GNR stamps on the leatherwork.

Then next the spare mags which took some getting and finally found on ebay, the lastly the gun it's self from Ralph Shattuck and exactly every thing as he described it, complete with the last remaining item, the pin punch.

Putting a rig together like this in this part of the world is nearly impossible, but here it is and many thanks to those who have helped me with the challange.

The mag with the gun has no number ,just S 42 stamp on the base. I am not sure if it is the correct mag for the gun. May be some one else with a GNR can tell me.

The mag with the S 42 stamp is a WW2 armorer's replacement magazine made by Mauser... it is not correct for your GNR, but I am not sure what would be correct. I am just guessing :confused: but I think it would be a non-blued (nickle?) tube with a wood bottom, and probably not numbered (plain)... Now let's wait for someone who has a complete rig to give us the real scoop on what kind of mag you should have to be correct for the period... :rolleyes:

I am at a bit of a loss.
Page 255 of Kenyons Luger at Random shows a GNR with a type 2 aluminium base mag and so does the GNR shown on page l79 of Kenyons "The multi-national pistol" although I think the photos are of the same gun.
On page 232 of "The Luger book" by John Walter also shows a GNR with a type 2 mag.
I think that it might (should) be (please excuse the grammar)a type 2 plain aluminium base but possibly numbered as Pat suggested in the post above.Hopefully some one will inform us.

When I used to own a GNR pistol many years ago, it had an unnumbered aluminium base magazine.

When I got my GNR, it came with the correct holster, punch, cleaning rod and an unnumbered loading tool. It has an unnumbered aluminum base magazine with a nickle tube. I think it is also correct. I believe that the Portuguese rigs were fitted out with commercial type accessories, including the magazine.

Just curious... What is the time period of the issue of this Luger? I am unfortunately separated from my reference books by about 50 miles today...

I was under the impression that this type of rig was Pre-WW1... and I didn't think aluminum bottomed mags were used until after WW1?

Could one of you give us a quick history lesson on the GNR Luger?

I agree with Ron that the Mauser Portuguese Lugers were fitted with commercial type accessories including a unnumbered magazine(s).

The Portuguese GNR Lugers were made by Mauser around 1935/36. While Kenyon states that exactly 564 Lugers were delivered to the National Republican Guard in according to records or a serial range spread, there could be a possibility a fraction more were delivered.

All of my Mauser pistols from 1934 on have aluminium base mag. The "G" date does and my Persian P08 Long up to the type 4 mag which is plastic. The GNR was made around 1935.
Looking thru Kenyons books it seems everything Mauser made from 1934 onward had Aluminium.
Being seperated from the books is nearly as bad as being seperated from the collection.

You are correct...I do not think Mauser used wood in the 1930's...but in addition to aluminum, they did use the black phenolic plastic bottoms as well...

A friend of mine have the GNR mag pouch with two mag blued wood base without number and KK10 on spine in a cercle:stamp 31 on the 'Contanzo'
It's come full like this.

You guys got me thinking. When I bought my Dutch M11 a while ago, it came with a 2nd version Dutch magazine and one I couldn't really place.

I took it for a 'converted' one, but the wood base really feels part of the mag and it might match Pat's description.

The wood base is of an excellent quality and unnumbered. The alu tube is blued and again shows no numbers or marks.
