K date question

Since I dont to look at many of these, I wondered if any of you fellas or gals have one would you comment on my curiosity? Early K dates are said to have Script S all over the gun on most parts. The one shown in Jan Still's "Third Reich Lugers" from the top view shows a Gothic or smooth font S on the top of the front sight blade but a Script S on all the other parts. Do K dates typically have either types of Ss on the top of the front sight, gothic and script? Thor

Re: K date question

Without your serial number it is hard to say whether you have a transition gun or a true first issue. The early ones have all scriptic S's on ALL parts -- even the firing pin.

Re: K date question

Correct me if I am wrong but I believe gothic refers to san serif (the LATE S on K dates) smooth curves letters. Scriptic refers to the EARLY S with the serifs and ornamental style.

I have a couple of the early type with all scriptic S's and they are on nearly every part including interior parts such as the firing pin retainer and toggle link pin. I wish they were here in front of me to check for sure. A friend here in Colorado recently bought s/n 1536 and it had at least one of the later style S's on the toggle train. It seems the transition began before s/n 1536.

How Early

Early one being what, one of the first 100, 400, 800, 1200, 1500, 1700? Makes a difference where it was produced in each of the variations. There are more than 4 variations of K-dates also. Oh well, doesn't really matter anyway -- enjoy your new toy!

Re: K date question

Dave, mine is serial 1594 and it has the Gothic S on it but SCRIPT S on all other parts. You are right about the S designation. Thanks for the help. I think mine may have been "worked on before" It only has two digits "94" which is not correct but it has what appears to be original droop eagle on left back barrel and the O 37 proof on the left side, that really look correct to me. It has the very small land gauge of 8,82 which also looks correct. I still think there are a few phoney things about this gun, but I like it. It has a mismatched hold open too. Thanks for the info! I think what I am trying to determine is just how much is original and how much was made to appear to be correct. Thor
