Martz made his 45 Lugers by offset cutting two shooter Lugers just off the centerline and welding the two larger halves back together to make a WIDER gun, the receiver and barrel were somewhat different, I am sure he made, or had made custom barrels. The 45 P.38 MIGHT have been done similarly. The one 45 Luger I saw at Ralph's was listed at $5000 and I would have bought in a heartbeat has I had the funds. Lot of work in that piece and it was flawless from outward appearance.

Interesting and no, I have never seen a .45 P.38 either, but I don't doubt the ability of any reasonably good machinist to make one given time and money. There should be no doubt that the Chinese are capable of both copying and doing original design work.

Why would such a pistol be made? A pre-production prototype is one possibility, maybe for a project that was shelved after the U.S. banned import of pistols from China.

An expensive fake? Maybe, but a faker would surely have put Walther's name on the gun and passed it off as an unknown, but possible, prototype of a gun that was actually advertised in the U.S. before WWII.

It is EXTREMELY unlikely, but wouldn't it be a hoot if this ".45 P.38" was actually one of the experimental .45 cal Walther Model MP made prior to WWII that somehow made its way to China where it picked up some Chinese graffiti?! Check out Lot #374 on Greg Martin's auction. There is a link to the auction in a post by Pete Ebbink under "Gun Show Announcements and Discussion"
