"The Ammo Shortage Of 2013"

This appeared in my inbox this morning, from someplace called 'Alloutdoor.com'...(I never heard of it; don't know where it came from)...

Nothing really new, except his predictions on length of the shortage..."it will be between 18 months and 2 years"...

Curly1 06-19-2013 09:49 AM

I got that also, looks worse than the last time.

Not sure if I can hold out for 1-1/2 to two years unless I start being more careful.

In the last couple of months, I gave 100 rd (each) of 9mm and 45acp, couple boxes of 30 ball, and a couple boxes of 357 HP, to my son’s father-in-law. Gave my daughter 300 rd of 9mm. Just gave my son a case of AE 223 to go with his graduation present of a NIB Bushmaster. Went to the range three times and used up 650 rd of 9mm, a brick of 22lr and 100 rd of 40 S&W.

I visited my local Wal-Mart store a few days ago and they had three boxes of 9MM Luger ammo on the shelf at what seemed a reasonable price but it was a brand I'm not familiar with so I past it up but after clicking on the link postino provided and reading the commentary I'm not so sure I made the right decision. Sure would hate to have to wait 18 to 24 months before it's available again. :(

I also got that same email this morning. I wonder just where they acquired our email addresses? Ammo is starting to become more available in my part of the country. It is nowhere near back to normal, but pointed in the right direction.

Hopefully now that the U.S. Senate has cut Obummer off at the knees on his plans for our guns and the UN Small Arms Treaty, maybe some folks will take a deep breath and quit purchasing every round of ammo that they can find.

My Alloutdoors.com email had a big 'Cabelas' ad embedded; coincidentally (or not), I had just ordered & received 4 pairs of cargo shorts from Cabelas...

Visited a local store last week end. It's pretty empty. Most guns left were lever rifles and shotguns. Almost all pistols and revolvers, modern or C&R disappeared. Only a few 1911 style pistols were displayed in glass cabinet. Even bolt action rifles are scarce.

Why didn't owner order more? Not easy to sell these days??

Ammo,,,, .380ACP was available in small quantities. Other ammo, rare.

this has been talked about on CMP forum, main gunboards, etc

my experience has been - Memphis, store I went to had lots, another store, lots, but major calibers were scarce or gone (9mm, 45acp, 223, 30-06 mostly out).

Local here in PA, about the same

Plenty at gunshows I have gone to, prices high to stupid, but you can buy every caliber

And not just ammo - as noted in another thread, 9mm bullets are 'Out Of Stock, No Backorder'...I haven't run out of powder yet, so I haven't tried to buy any...Is that another scarce item???

I heard that primers are hard to come these days. Is that true? When people do "reloading", that's an assembly process, if no primers then reloading becomes a question mark..... saw capable people could make guns at home, but I have never heard anyone could make ammo from scratch.

Edward Tinker 06-19-2013 09:42 PM

yes, reloading gear is harder to get, especially primers - I haven't reloaded in years, so, it does not occur for me to look

mrerick 06-19-2013 10:33 PM

A couple of observations. At my gun club, the ranges are generally picked clean of spent brass now. I used to be able to take home a small bucket full every visit... Even if people are not reloading, they are keeping brass. Perhaps for themselves someday, or for a friend now.

It's interesting that at times of plenty, those of us that accumulate ammo are derided as hoarders or arsenal builders...

I've slowly bought ammo over the years whenever I thought it was a good deal.

About a year and a half ago, the CMP offered some surplus Remmington SV .22LR. I bought 10,000 rounds at about 2.4 cents apiece. Today, they are routinely getting 20 cents for .22LR! I teach, and use it in classes. Without it, I'd have to raise prices.

Yup, same email for me this A.M. I'm signed up at Gunbroker, Armslist, Auctionarms, etc. etc. We all probably have something like this in common. It was a fairly interesting article, however, so I wasn't particularly upset to have received it--other than the implication that some site is pandering our contact info.

The norm nowadays at Wally World is that the case is empty, and there isn't even anyone in attendance at the sporting goods dept. The other day, there was a warm body at the register station, so I asked him just what the deal was. He was kind of irate in answering the question, but said they were still getting ammo in. When I asked him how I might get ahold of some, that's when he got testy, and said those who were buying it were selling it on the "black market"! I guess this means those offerings on the auction and classified sites where it is available aplenty, but at prices almost doubled--up near "stupid", as Ed said.

I'm known for my patience, but this is ridiculous. Anybody I encounter doing this will get the "dope slap" from me if I find out about it. I just want a couple hundred rounds so I can take my Range Safety course for match shooting! And I guess that regular attendance at matches is something I'll have to wait for, until this calms down.

The same doubled pricing is amok on eBay and Amazon for reloading equipment, presses, dies. My regular FFL rations the reloading supplies.

I was curious. I purchased a case of 9mm tula for $8.77 a box and a case of 9mm privi partisan for $10.07 a box all plus shipping on 12/3. I had never used those brands before. I still have not got around to using them yet and was curious of how good they were.

alvin 06-20-2013 06:40 PM

Serbian PRVI is supposed to be good. I consumed many PRVI rounds in 7,63x25mm (brass cased, don't know their configuration on 9x19mm), never had a problem. No experience on Tula. Is it Russian steel cased ammo?

policeluger 06-20-2013 06:43 PM

Prvi is good ammo, use it here in the shop from time to time....
