Unloadable magazine???
 

I recently bought a new Mec Gar magazine for my Luger from Midway. The spring is so stiff I am unable to load more than 3 rounds in it. I returned it to Midway and promptly received s refund.
Can someone let me know the availability of mags which are loadable?

Hi,

Mec-Gar makes the best replacement magazine for a Luger. Luger magazine springs are very strong, due to the very slanted design angel of the Luger's grip.

Do you have and know how to properly use a Luger's loading tool? If not, this will easily assist you in loading a full magazine of 8 cartridges.

i have found that once you get mec gar mag. fully loaded leave it loaded for a week or two + it should be easier to load after that -

Welcome to the forum. Using your thumb to depress the follower button on a Luger mag will quickly give you a sore thumb. The Germans made a combination tool that also serves as a loading assist to make it easier to put a full 8 rounds in a Luger mag. As already mentioned, Mec-Gar mags have strong springs so a tool is almost necessary.

Original tools are expensive but there are reproductions on ebay and also sold by Sarco and Numrich as well as other places. The repros that I have all work well.

I am having a problem seeing a German soldier in the heat of battle have a problem loading his magazines......

somebody is "modern manufacturing" magazines which ignore the realities of front lines in war.......

One thing is true irregardless of whether it's an original or a Mec-Gar magazine.

They are way easier to unload than to load. :thumbsup:

The reality of front line war is that sustained use of a handgun as a primary weapon is an unrealistic concept.
They are more defensive in nature.
Most often in the hands of NCOs or Officers whose job is to actions of others.
Basic load was only two mags, while actual fighters with rifles and SMGs had bandoleers and loaded pouches with multiple clips.
Crew served weapons guys had handguns as defensive pieces or at least something to have in case of loss or damage to the primary piece.
I never have had any real problem loading a few Luger mags at a time without a tool. Tool is a help, though.

As we get "older", it is common that we lose strength in our hands, and elsewhere. It is a fairly common occurrence for an older person to come into the shop and ask me to make it easier for them to retract the slide on their semi-auto-tragic pistol. I tell them,"sure, I can do that, I can put a lighter recoil spring in, but then the gun won't work". Or they bring in a small, double action revolver, with a factory trigger, that the little old lady can't pull to the rear without using both hands, and both fingers on the trigger. I just hook the follower button of a luger mag on the edge of the bench at the range and push the mag up, thereby drawing the follower down, and just drop the cartridges into the mag. Easy.

I still have the hand strength to depress the follower button on a Luger mag... but why in hell would I want to when the loading tool makes it so much easier?

I don't see a problem here. I'll take a very strong spring in an original or Mec Gar mag over a weak one... all day long.:)

That's why two magazines were issued.

Reloading any pistol's magazine in a combat situation is a definite no no!

I'm new to the forum and recently got my 1st luger. Also got 2 Mec-Gar mags with it and found them and the one that came with the pistol to be hard to load, but seems like all 9mm pistols are hard to load.

I had the same problem with a couple of my 22s that would bite into my fingertips, ended up making a tool for them. Yesterday i made one for my luger as well.

Here's a photo of the 22 tool I made but the luger tool is the same size only the hole is bigger. Simply place it over the mag and push down on the mag button as you load with the tool.

Tool is made from acrylic plastic.

I cushion the magazine button with the edge of face cloth. Your thumb will be happy!

I could make my own from 1/16 angle steel from a hardware store.
I bet it's not difficult, bunch of images on the net from all the sides+ size ratio next to the lugers.

but for $ 12.99 remake- the cheapest I found on ebay- i would not bother.

I made the acrylic plastic one in about 1/2 hour. I had a chunk of 3/16" thick acrylic, cut the shape out on my bandsaw, then drilled and Dremeled/filed the hole out until it fit the magazines.

I spray painted the luger tool yellow, so I could find it in the bottom of my range bag!
