Krieghoff Being Auctioned

Below is a link to a Krieghoff that is being auctioned with a starting bid of $10,000.00. This is way out of my league; however, I thought others might enjoy seeing it and commenting on its authenticity, etc.

Mauser720 - Ron

This gun is beautiful, but this makes me worry, I am so paranoid with the pretty guns, having seen so many fakes lately, so take this lightly.

The gun appears to have been re-blued at some point, several of the edges are rounded, note the right side railing and the 881 on the barrel looks hand done not stamped. The strawing is too good, there is some ware just in front of the side plate; this should not have bluing in it. I donâ??t like the looks of the â??9â? in the date stamp. I also donâ??t like the looks of the front barrel band. The edge above the sear bar shows blued pitting.

Positive notes:
This gun has been taken care of; note the grease, the high intensity lighting can play tricks. The heat treating is pretty clear on the ramps. Is it a real HKâ??I think it is, could it have been re-blued there is at least a chance that it has been professionally restored.

Is it worth $10,000 dollars â??I will leave that up to the bidders

The people who photographed this gun may have done more harm than good; everything I noted may not even be a problem. This should enlist a few comments however

Thanks for Posting

This is a prime example, in my opinion, of a high priced luger that has to be examined personally to draw any definite conclusions. Krieghoffs were more highly polished at the factory than other contemporary Mauser lugers and some I have examined that looked refinished to me were found to be original by "experts".

I agree DR, 100%
No way can a proper evaluation be done using the pictures provided.

On the other hand, the owners could avoid all this BS by simply posting or insisting on better pictures, something thatâ??s cheap to do now days.

This has the added advantage of attracting more potential buyers and the chance that a bidding war will result giving them much higher profits, after all, that is why they posted their guns in the first place.

I do not believe that the "matched mag" is correct. Just my opinion.

There is a lot to like about this gun; there are also a number of things that are problematic due to the photography. If there is a post-sale inspection period-which I doubt will be offered-I would be tempted to go for it. If, OTOH, it is an "As is, where is" sale, no way would I take the risk.

Looking at the barrel proof in-person with a loupe would be something I would want to do...if bidding and looking at it in-person during a preview :

The "2" appears to have a bit of an odd shape to it...

Magazine proof on the G-B offering :

Magazine proof from R. Gibson's book on page 92 :

There is also the question if the G-B magazine should have its proof above the SN and stamped upside-down when looking at the SN...

Not sure what to make of this...

I was trying to zoom-in on the "heat polished" ramp of the front "ear" on the left side and this apparent discoloration of a wider area popped up...

Guess one needs to ask if you want that on a $ 10K gun.
