Feedback on 1940 42 Mauser
 

Well, I received my 1940 Mauser and I am not disappointed, a few small blemishes. I have uploaded pictures up my on server and would like feedback. All numbers match, took it mostly apart, but not alllll the way. Under the sideplate, there are scratches from a screwdriver or something, not bad, but there.

The serial number is 4890 h

(note: The left side picture looks like it has a nick on the barrel, it doesn't).

Trigger plate has 90 on the outside and 49 on the inside. NORMAL?

Grips are very sharp and nice, both are stamped eagle 655 on the inside. NORMAL?


Magazine is an aluminum bottom, serial 9939 and marked Eagle 63. Obviously Incorrect, but same type?

What is your estimation of bluing remaining?

Thanks for the nice look at your new addition...luger families seem to grow, don't they ?

I read in one of my luger books (can't remember out of 15 books) that Mauser would stamp the outside of the trigger plate with the last two numbers of the full serial; and on the inside of the trigger plate they would take the first two numbers of the full serial and add one. Thus your "48" becomes "49"; stamped on the inside surface.

My Mauser '41 byf "Black Widow" does this...for a few weeks I thought my BW had a "funny" trigger plate...

Do one of our Mauser experts know why this was done by Mauser and do all Mauser lugers have this ?

The 1940/42 can have either blank 655 stamped grips or 655 and the serial number.

The correct magazine for an "h" block gun would be a code 122 -- the early examples had either a 122 or a 655 proofed bottom.

The inside sideplate number is one digit higher on these. The K dates, G-dates, and 1936 did not do this and the 1937 almost always had the same first two digits of the serial. Then late 1937 they started going on digit higher. I do not know why and have never heard an explanation.

The 1940/42 started in the Z blocks so your gun is right in the middle of the production as they went into the N block.

There are the common military models, the navy models, and there are a very few police models with a sear safety. The only different variations in the military models is the type of magazines they used -- early had 655, 122 with and E/37 on the base (rare magazines), and the most common 122 magazines.

Bill or whomever, what kind of magazine is the "correct" one for a H serial 1940? Obviously the one with my gun is reasonably correct, but not absolutely correct. Should mine be a plastic base or metal?

I wasn't sure what a code 122 was, metal I believe?

Very nice addition, the Luger is very pretty! On the first photo of the right side, I noticed what appears to be "file" marks on the frame. I have seen this on a number of Lugers and one of my 1941 Lugers has this in the same area. On my 1941, the area with the "file" markls is about twice as wide as yours.

I was wondering if anyone knows the reason or if this is just speeding up the final frame clean-up by the finishing folks???

Very nice. I have a 1940/42 shooter that is in the z block. I did not know that the run began with z. I had always thought that the z was at the end of the run. There is always something new to learn. Now when I get home I am going to check on those file marks Marvin was talking about. I will let you know the results.

The correct magazine is a blue, aluminium based, code 122 on the side, magazine. They have the serial number and the suffix on the base and a + if it is the second magazine. -- The black plastic magazines were used as replacements and were not issued until about June of 1941, or the T or U blocks of the byf 41's. I could be wrong, but wasn't the Z run for the 1939 run and just went into 1940, but then would the top be marked 1940?

And yes, the guy I got the gun from is an engineer by trade and he noticed the markings too, all from the factory and the quality although good, should be better?

They look almost brand new from the back.

I don't think I told the story on the gun, shame on me. Guy was in the army, stationed state-side and he bought or traded for the Luger from another GI in 1945 and then went home and the Luger stayed in a nice civilian holster for the next 50 some years. [img]smile.gif[/img]

50 years in a holster and it still looks that darn good? i'm putting mine back into one pronto then.

but really, it has sat in a holster basically for 50 years? on a self? in a safe? what did he do? clean it everyday like i do? <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

I wondered that too, I would think the holster would be bad for it, and don't recommend this as a practice! [img]mad.gif[/img]

heh, heh, but really, the holster has that green around the back of the holster, marked Boise, Idaho (well known holster maker there) and the gun shows wear outside of the holster. I think that he took it out when the wife wasn't around and cleaned it every now and then. The wife didn't know he had it, I guess she was non-gun likeable. There is wear on the normal places for holster wear and then the backstrap has some lightening because it was exposed to air all the time.

Excellent gun, all the right wear marks in the right places, two questions? Are you going to shoot it? And how many nights have you slept with it?
