New tall Luger sight inserts

2 Attachment(s)
I've had an on-going struggle getting my mix-master Navy 6" shooter to print down on the target, with the original front sight insert placing the shots about a foot high at the normal indoor ranges. So I went to a "tall Mauser" (rifle) front sight insert that measured right at .300". That did the job, however it looked very much like a pistol with a tall rifle front sight and it was too wide to allow the use of the rear sight.
Enter G. T., with his new, tall sight inserts.
I got to try the GTLS250 model recently. It took very little filing to get it into the dovetail, but it is snug and not going anywhere.
At the range yesterday at 50' the group centered about 3.5" high (standing position) over the point of aim. 115 gr. FMJ reloads.
Then, bringing the target in to 25', the 6 shot, 1/2" group was barely 3/4" high, shot from kneeling, gun braced on a shooting bag.
Yes, we have a winner! Perfect function, too.
Given that the rear sight was set to 100 meters, I expect it to print a bit high, but it has to be within reason given the realistic ranges that I have available to me at this time.
I'm looking forward to experimenting with the GTLS300 version, a full .300" tall, but understand that it may bring my shot placement down a bit too far.
As always, Thanks G. T!
On a side note, it is ironic that I also shot my new Springfield Armory lightweight 1911 compact carry gun, also 9mm. Had several loading/extraction FTF issues, and it would barely keep them in the size of a doorknob at 50'.
I just couldn't help but casually make sure that my friends (all 1911 or Glock snobs) got a glimpse of my Luger target...

You need to shoot at 38 ft.; then you will be "right on"! ;)

Quite an improvement in POI. GT's sights are very well made for sure.

Why 38'?

Just guessing...50' groups high, 25' groups low, 38' (actually 37.5') should put it in the middle. :p

By my fine calibrated eye and mathematical genius, it is 38' that will put it on the center. :p

And here I thought you were going to tell me that the bullet is rising and crosses the line of sight at 38' and falls down to the mark at 100m. Or something sciencey like that...

Hi David,
Here's proof of your theory. These sailors were shooting at 50 meters with their sights set at 100 meters (I assume).

True, but way too technical for luger buffs.

Do my eyes deceive me or are they shooting a brick wall? Wonder it the firing squads use it too?

Brick wall?

I saw that too! Bullet bounce back would have kept them hopping plus what happens when the wall is shot away?

DavidJayUden 11-03-2017 06:34 AM

"what happens when the wall is shot away?"

I guess they just move down a few feet.

Bounce back?, probably not to 50m.

I suspect some officer decided that using the wall for a target was not a good idea long before the wall was breached.
Or perhaps that is bullet proof paint.:D

As promised! .275" available!

Hi to all, the recent production GTFS-.275" is on the way to Luger doc as we write this! These front sight options are of very high quality (as good as original) ... and are exclusive thru Tom,
Next sight option to be produced will be the tallest, GTLS-.300"
and then maybe a final run of .225" (standard) All in all, not many, but should be enough to tame down a few high shoot'in outfits! Best to all, til...lat'r....GT

Gerry, can you tell us do-it-yourselfers what angle the sight dovetail should be cut at??? :)

G.T. 11-22-2017 02:53 PM

dove tail angle....

Hi Rich, hopefully, Olle can jump in here as he cuts most of my dovetails, Or Don, either does a great job...
The sight blades I just had manufactured were take directly fro the original print and then reconfigured to compensate for the additional dimension height needed?
So, I sent 3 sample original barrels with perfect or un-used front sight blocks / dovetails..
Also sent the updated print from the Luger 1913 blueprint drawings
And three original uninstalled standard 4" barrel sight blades... They did all the retro engineering and modifications, (tooling fee, not cheap!)
They are perfect in fit and form... not going to last long... Best to you Rich, til...lat'r.....GT....

Some time ago, Olle discussed the sight dovetail and finally Olle found a company selling a cutter small enough and close enough to cut the dovetail. The prints do not show the angle in degrees; you have to work it out with trig tables. Then convert to degrees. And since tolerances enter into it, there can be more than one correct angle. But not too many correct cutters for the guy who likes to screw it up himself. :D

I just wondered what you had settled on. :)

It would be nice to find a dovetail cutter that would allow for one cut and done.

G.T. 11-22-2017 08:27 PM

Hi Rich....

Actually, they did have me sign off on the degree tolerance as special cutters would have to be ordered to do the exact spec? It was a degree on way or the other, but still within the tolerances on the print.... I'll let you know if I come across it, but it was a total of 1 degree different then the print... they fit great, so whatever they did, they did it right... :)... best to you, til....lat'r.....GT:cheers:

Hello to all, .300" on the way!

Hi to all, the next batch of Luger front sight blades made in a height of .300" are completed and on the way to us now! They will be available very soon! I will advise as we progress...
Two other original heights are still coming, and they are .200" and .225" which are both standard somewhere throughout Luger production history.... So, bottom line, very soon... you will be able to purchase front sight blades that run in five sizes..
.200" original style
.225" original style revised
.250" tall
.275" taller
.300" tallest
Please contact Lugerdoc here on the forum to order, or pre-order if you desire one of the one still coming.. best to all, til....lat'r....GT

Sights, sights, sights!

All the sizes listed in the above post are now complete and being shipped... I did get some of the original .200" made as well, might as well as long as the machine is running! Luger doc will take it from here.. all inquiries should be made to him... Height, quantity, etc. etc...
The main reason for them in my shop will be to sight in any of the GTS/T barrels now in the works! Best to all, I'm going to retire to the workshop for awhile... lot's to do... Best to all, and a Merry upcoming Christmas to my forum family and friends, til...lat'r....GT...
