Military Marked Commercial

http://gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=36053468

This is one variation that you don't see very often. I emailed the seller and the holster is commercial; no markings. Front sight E/N, Left side E/N, no proofs right frame, small parts strawed. I was planning to bid on this but is out of my reach. I wonder if the bidders really know what it is. The seller sure doesn't.

Steve,

Educate me here. A byf 42: strawed small parts; no P-08 stamped on the frame; serial numbers on the frame, left receiver, and barrel blanked out; 64 on the toggle and looks like 84 on the takedown and sideplate (may not be...)...

Looks like an upper/lower mismatch to me.

Am I missing something from the seller which explains all this?

I questioned the seller when this came up a couple weeks ago. It is all matching. The letter suffix(w) is correct for commercial pistols. You can find this same model in TRL under commercial models.

These could have either strawed or blued small parts.

I think the seller has based the listing on previously listed Black Widows. Hey, it is a byf 42 with black grips so it must be a Black Widow.

There are no military proofs/acceptance stamps; only commercial..

The barrel does not seem to be serialized, just the diameter marking. I believe this has been reblued and restrawed, but it is interesting. Yes, the suffix is correct for a commercial W.

I'd like to see it in person.

I don't think I would pay 3K for it.

This gun is a BYF 42 Commercial/Contract Luger. Luger at Random (pg.291) has a picture and description of a similar gun in the same block (w). According to the book, there are only two other reported. They have salt blue finish with strawed small parts. I received pics from the seller and informed the variation and rarity of the gun. I am not surprise if this gun goes over $3500.
I wish I had the cash to get this one!

Tony,
Help me out here.......According to the book (lugers at Random)

There should be Nazi commercial proof on the left side above the ser #, German markings on the extractor and safety lever.

In the photos I don't see that.....

You have other photos showing that detail ?

There is an Eagle over N (Commercial) right above the serial number left side receiver, front of the sight base and another one by the breechblock (last one not confirm from pics, however seller indicates that it is there). The gun is in mint condition as shown on the pictures with cris markings. Also, she offered a 3 day inspection when I asked. It is just to expensive for me. I hope this one goes to a Luger collector!

E/N left side...

It would be interesting to know the serial number of this piece. The 42 two digit Banner Lugers with strawed parts are in the "w" block and are marked with the E/N on the barrel sight block, left receiver and left breech. In order for this piece to be correct the E/N MUST BE ON THE BREECH, otherwise the byf toggle has been switched with a Banner toggle. Serial number would be interesting because if it falls within the 42 Banner range of approximately 7730w to 9750w it means to me that it is part of this production run/contract and spare parts were being used to make these. -- Bill

The serial number is 8264w.
