.30 Luger bullet heads

Is the Hornady XTP 90 grain HP the only game in town? I had great results with Hornady 93 grain Soft Point/RN but have been told they are discontinued.

Any other recommendations on bullet heads?

Hi:

Bullet heads, yea, that's what e-bay called them in their explanation of just what they were going to prohibit. Ha.

.30 bullets are hard to find in fmj. and the variety is quite limited. You might consider lead bullet heads instead. In fact, sizing the head to fit your barrel properly will greatly enhance accuracy. Original barrels seem to run at about .312, so a lead .313 would be perfect if it would chamber in your Parabellum.

Just my thoughts.

Sieger,

Thanks for the information, I reload but don't cast my own bullets. I have about 1,000 of the 93 grain bullets left and may buy the 90 grain Hornaday, it looks like some of the guys have had luck with this bullet. However, I just can't see shooting a HP in a 1920 commercial since I just "plink" with the round.

Any of you guys have an OAL that works well with this bullet?

Thanks!

Mark

Mark, I find round nose .32's and resize them. Works great! .32's are much more common than .30's. Jerry Burney

Thanks guys!

Perhaps cast .32 lead and resizing them may be a good option. The 93 grain Hornady bullets had the cannelure makiking a good OAL lenght possible and my BEST reloads for the 1920 commercial that I have!

I called Hornady about their bullets being discontinued and the tech guy said that was not true but they had none in stock. ......

Should we start a a "toll free" Hornaday 93 grain "bullet" bullet request? Here is their number, perhaps they will make another run so they won't be discontinued?

Hornady 30 cal LUGER .308 Soft Point/RN #1440

The more guys that call will speak volumes on the production and the same tech guy will field the calls.

Call the company, they will continue to make the bullets if they have enough interest!!! ... or this round will just die out ...

I use 4.5 g of 231 with much success.

Please call the toll free number, more guys that call will make an impact! It is TOLL FREE!

I would say something like this .. " Can't find the the .30 Luger bullets product number 1440 anywhere, have these been discontinued?"

Hi:

For the 7.65mm, the original DWM round nose ammo was loaded to 1.173 inches (29.8mm). Seems long doesn't it? Much longer than anything commercially available today. Try this length, and your Luger will not jam, with the proper powder charge, of course.

For your flat point, try 1.14 inches (29.0mm).

Thanks guys!

Charlie, those bullets look GREAT!

Do you have good reloading info? AOL? Powder?

Mark,

I have used Hornady .312 XTP 100 gr. hollow points in nearly every .30 Luger I have had. They work great, as is, out of the box.

Mark C.,

I use 5.0 gr Unique and 1.162 OAL.

Groove diameter, DWM specs:
min: 0.3098
nom: 0.3110
Max: 0.3114

This is a tighter spec than most US made barrels. The idea that Luger barrels vary in diameter is another one of those urban myths. That said, there are a few around that have been rebarreled with US 308 barrel stock.

Chamber mouth diameter:
min: 0.3331
nom: 0.3339
max: 0.3346

I include the chamber mouth diameter because it is important to make shure the cartridge outside neck diameter is at least 0.001 smaller then the chamber neck diameter. You must leave room for the neck to expand or pressures will rise.

Noel, I am thinking about getting a set of 7.65 reloading dies. Any recommendations?

Yes

Read the .30 Luger ammo observations thread below that I started.

Lots of talk on Dies and reloading the little bottleneck.

I used to have a C-H canneluring tool, simple little device. Worked well too.
