30 Mauser question?

I would just like to know what your favorite C96 Broomhandle loads are. I am thinking about loading up some for my Broomhandle and I would like some input? Any info would be appreciated.

The load that I use is 6gr of Unique with a #8005 85gr round nose bullet by Sierra. It is not a very hot load but we are talking about a 70+ year old gun.

If you have not done so, get a new bolt stop. You can keep the old one but use a new one. Tom Heller on this forum has them. They can crystalize and break. Since that is the only thing keeping the bolt from coming out the back of the pistol, a trip to the morgue or at least the hospital could result.

Check out this web site for information on these Mausers: http://www.northwest-denture.com/mauser1896/

They have a large reloading chart as well as other information.

Hi

I had this posted before on another forum, but if it helps you.....

I have been reloading for about 20 years. I have been reloading 7.63 Mauser for about 2 years now, but I had been preparing for the Mauser caliber for some time. Scrounging any brass I could find, books and info I could buy, barter, or steal.

I have found that the most important reloading tool is the cronograph. Ammo catalogs are full or crap.

So the first thing I did was test fire some factory ammo in my Broomhandle and a friend's Bulgarian Tokarev. My Mauser is a M30 with a 5.2inch barrel. the Tokarev has a 4.6 inch barrel

Sellier and Bellot does an average of 1390fps out of the Tok
1986 nny Yugo does an average of 1395fps out of the Tok
Fiocchi 7.63 Mauser does an average of 1230fps out of the Tok

Fiocchi does an average of 1247fps out of my Mauser
Finnish made 7.63 ammo dated 1958 averaged 1265fps
I took one DWM round out of my collection; 1345fps
And pulled Sellier and Bellot reloaded with 7 grains of their factory powder does an average of 1263 fps At $10 a box, it's cheap shooting, and reloadable brass.

Starting fresh:
Using Sierra's 85grn JSP bullet

I have 3 pistol powders I play with, Nobel Pistol Powder #3 (bullseye clone) , IMR SR 4756, and IMR SR 7625

In the Mauser with an Overall cartridge length of 1.375"
5.0 grns of PP3 does an average of 1236fps
SR4756 (averages) 6.5grn/1161fps 6.7/1300fps 7.0/1390fps

SR7625 (averages) 5.0/1055fps 5.5/1239fps 6.0/1320fps

SR 7625 makes very accurate ammunition and it is quiet compared to Fiocchi factory ammo.

I have been testing a hard cast (Linotype) 84grn cast bullet. I only lube the bottom groove and I crimp in the top groove. I tried all three powders and only SR 7625 gave me good accuracy that made casting worth while.
4.5 grains was strong enough to work the action, and cause a minimum of keyholing.

Hello sticker

Not familiar with SR 7625? Does it have any special properties?
i.e. as per Accurate 5744? IMR powders are not readily available in the UK.
My C96 is 90 years old so I want to give it a nice gentle load....

Hi

You would have to google " powder burning rate charts" to see how the powders you can get compare to SR7625.

Have fun :D

Guys,

A *huge* shipment of original DWM/RWS 1930s era mauser ammo has recently arrived in the US. This stuff is still in the original boxes and is untouched. Looks like it came from the factory yesterday. It is selling for about 420/box now, but expect the price to fall. Stuff is coming out of Sweeden.

Hello - here are some of my loads. All loads use NEI 85.308 GC sized .311", CCI 500 primers, Midway cases, and have an overall length of 1.38" The data shows powder, charge weight, and average velocity.

HS6, 7.3gr, 1228 fps
HS6, 7.6gr, 1275 fps
HS6, 8.2gr, 1349 fps
Viht N340, 5.4gr, 1102 fps
Viht N340, 6.0gr, 1246 fps

I also tried WW296 but didn't save the data. It seemed promising, but I'd never seen it mentioned in this application, and consequently never pursued it. It would be interesting to try again when it warms up outside.
