A friend stopped by with his 1917 Navy. Bought it from Shattuck about 20 years ago. He has repro grips on it in the photos, but has the originals at home.

Hi Doug,
Thanks for posting those photos of your friends 1917 Navy #8282. As far as I can tell it looks all original, something of a miracle considering it's source. Is the magazine numbers matching?

I don't see anything wrong with it either. However, I would like to see a good photo of the barrel s/n, a photo showing the inside of the chamber, a photo of the toggle pin end and a good, clear and well focused close-up of the C/Ms on the receiver. One not taken at an angle.

He didn't come out and say it was from Prior Lake... :p

All kidding aside, it is an outstanding looking Navy Luger.

Alaska is a BIG place... There are plenty of places to be going to. Don't make us mad up here, we'll cut the state in half and make Texas the 3rd largest state...

Back in '71 I was MedEvaced back to CONUS. Toward the end of the flight, my C9 made a stop in a blacked-out base, at night, with tight security {AP's} to keep us from even knowing the name of the base. (No signs, no unit patches). It had black 4-engine aircraft but I couldn't say what they were. We were led to a building with a long corridor lined on both sides with those old pay phones [rotary dial, coin operated]. We were told any calls we made were free.

Might have been in Alaska...The AirEvac C9 stopped at every island, atoll, and coral reef in the Pacific and ended up in Northern California before dropping down into the real USA (and continuing to the East Coast).

Might have been a base in Alaska...Or the Aleutians...

Hi Rick,
The late Ralph Shattuck lived in Peoria, IL, prior to moving to Arizona. Another prolific, but less skilled faker, is based in Prior Lake, MN. Confusing, I know.

I believe than Ralph was originally from Michigan and retired to Peoria, AZ. MATC (Military) flights from the midwest, stop in Alaska to refuel on their way to bases in Asia. TH

Thanks Tom, I stand corrected.

Tom, I have tried many times to explain to acquaintances (sometimes to friends) that it is necessary to use a globe to track the paths of aircraft (and ships) from one continent to another. Example; flying from New York to Paris, you fly over Ireland. (Close enough to not matter).

Occasionally, they persist in believing that a map shows how that is not possible. I slot those people in the group 'flatlanders'. ;)

As I have done more than once.

My last flight to Asia was civilian and took me over parts of Russia and, I think, China. It was non-stop from Dulles to Seoul-Inchon.

There used to be a guy from Peoria, Illinois who made most of the shows and always had a lot of Lugers.
He was a decent guy and I still have one I got from home.
Can't recall his name for the life of me.
He's been gone since the 70s, I think.
