A while back my friend, and fellow unit mark addict George Anderson "keoki7" sent me a book entitled "The German Army at Passchendaele" by Jack Sheldon.

It is a very well written account of a little known, but very vicious and bloody battle against the British Forces at Flanders in 1917. Filled with first hand accounts by officers from the numerous German Regiments and their respective Companies. It gives you the feeling and mental images of what war in the trenches was truly like. It was pure Hell.

If you are an Imperial Unit Mark history nut? You need to read this book. There are 100 or more Regiments and / or Units mentioned, with detailed observations and first hand accounts from the men who served in them.

There are several accounts of the battle from Officers and men of 164th Infantry Regt. The LP.08 in my photo, was there. It's marked to 164.R.1.1. 164th Regiment 1st Company weapon #1. After reading this book, I have a new appreciation for this particular piece.

This book is outstanding...

Sheldon has also authored works on the Germans at Vimy Ridge and the Somme. The best of the three is "The German Army on the Somme 1914-1916". The author is a retired British army officer living in France and a real master of his craft.

I also agree with George. The very best is the book on the Somme. Then Vimy Ridge, and lass the Passendale (spelling?).
This doen't mean the others are not great, I just thought the Somme was brilliant and wonderful.

He has authered the book titled (I think) the Germans at Beaumont Hamel" which is both a history and a tour book, reasonably cheap and very interesting. Well worth having.

I am looking for english language books about WW1 western front battles and especially if they mention iunits from Hamburg, Niedersachen and W¼rttemburg. If anyone knows titles send them to me!!
Thanks
Patrick
