Luger Magazine: Strange Thing
 

I bid on a Luger magazine, which is a DWM wood bottom WW1...

as I have been told...but it came today and it does this:


when the mag is unloaded and is put into the pistol, the

slide stop works and it engages...like normal...


but when the last round is ejected from the pistol, the slide stop does not engage...and all you hear is the "click" of the fireing pin....but when you pull the slide

back, it works....


any ideas?


As by looking at it,the mag is well used and is WW1....and is in good to very good shape. My Luger is a DWM 1915.

Sounds like weak ammo or?
 

What kind of ammo are you using? Limp wristing? Mag catch or bottom of breach block worn?

I have another mag..the one that came with the pistol...and it works just fine, in all respects.....but it is a WW2 with a metal bottom, and is in better shape...

Replace the weak spring with a new Wolff spring.

The slot where the magcatch goes in is often worn, and when its worn the mag doesnt come up high enogh in the gun.

I also got a feeling that the mags aint really uniform and even if the catchhole looks unworn its not sure that it comes high enough up in the gun anyway.


A lugermag will get harmed by shooting so i use aftermarked Tripple k mags in my lugers, works perfectly and cost almost nothing.

Wolf Spring? where is that in the pistol and who would sell the spring?

the bottom is a little on the loose side....but I did tighten the bottom up a little bit...but I have also noiticed that the mag spring is not that heavy or hard to push down....


could this be the problem?


but also, the other mag that I have works fine....

Seriously, Wolff is a company that makes aftermarket gun springs, they can be found in the Links & Resources section of the Forum. I was suggesting that he replace the magazine spring with a new spring from Wolff.

Is that hard to do? a replacement...as how do you take the mag apart....I do think it needs a new spring.

Take out the bottom piece pin or pins. They are not expensive. Buy the spring on line at http://gunsprings.com/

It seems like I had this problem before a long time ago. I felt that the button on the mag was too small to trip the hold open. Different mags seem to have different buttons. Some buttons are on the flat side. Youa may have one of those mags that were made before the hold open was installed in 1913.

After I posted my earlier message I though that I might suggest that you take the receiver off and insert your empty magazine to see how it reacts with the hold open. I may be that you have a pre-1913 magazine with a smaller, flater button on it in a post 1913 Luger that is not engaging the hold open. This would explain the problems that you are having. Pre-1913 Lugers did not have hold opens so the size of the button did not matter.

A final afterthought (I promise). If you decide that the button is proper and engaging the hold open correctly, check the hold open for dirt, old oil etc. Its not hard to take out and reinstall. Do a little house cleaning first. Do this before buying a new spring for the mag. Installing a new spring in a mag can be a problem and should be the last resort. You can screw up a nice magazine tube accidentally and maybe break the wood bottom. The wood is quite old and brittle. Do the obvious and the free first.

thanks..I do think your right as the wood bottom mag does appear to have a smaller button....than the other one. But I do not want to put a spring in the wood bottom, as its old and I dont want to break it, besides that spring is very orgianal....

Yah, I have never taken a mag apart. People have told me that they can be tricky. But if you decide that you must do it just to do it, there is a little round hole on the side of the tube. Its just big enough to hold a nail. That nail can be used to hold the spring in place just long enough for you to DESTROY the original, old, brittle, wood bottom while trying to remove or reinstall it.
