Krieghoff Object Lesson
Its time for a Krieghoff object lesson, concerning the Krieghoff rework back frame stamp.
The photo below is of the back frame of a Luger currently for sale on a dealer website. I'm curious to know if this shares the characteristics of known-legitimate Krieghoff rework frame stamps. http://boards.rennlist.com/upload/KrieghoffExample.jpg My question has nothing to do with buying this gun. Rather, I had a chance to examine one of these at a gun show a few months ago, and the picture in my mind's eye is different from this photograph. I'm not sure I remember accurately, as well, which prompts the question. I seem to remember the stamping being much clearer and cleaner, the broken F looked different, there was no halo, and I don't remember if SUHL was present or not. Is it likely the gun I examined was faked, is the one in the photo questionable (the SUHL really bothers me), or is it my memory which is questionable? --Dwight |
Dear Dwight, Pages 142-143 of Gibson's book shows several pics of these DWM/Krieghoff "reworks". The SUHL was probably stamped seperately from the KRIEGHOFF. There were apparently 3 variations of these reworks. The photo you posted seems legitimate but Ralph has cautioned that this variation has been faked. It most likely takes an experienced eye to tell. Just out of curiosity, who is Ralph? Thanks.
|
Sir, he is Ralph Shattuck, well known long time Luger dealer. In the links section of the forum homepage there is a link to his business. Glad you are here.

George,
His website link is: http://www.worldoflugers.com/ You will have to pay to see what he has for sale. He looks something like this: http://www.lugerforum.com/images/RShattuck.jpg --------Ralph Shattuck-------- |
OH, that Ralph, I have known Ralph for quite a few years and have spent thousands of dollars on lugers from him. If anyone would know what lugers are being faked, it would be Ralph.
|
Good point sir, very very good point.

Dwight,
All of the real Krieghoff marked 20 Commercials I have seen had an "i" suffix. Most of the fake ones had a different letter suffix. Do you remember the suffix letter of that gun? |
Brad, no sign of a serial# in the ad.
