Mauser Swiss Police

Friends,

I have an unusual Swiss gun that I would like to share with the membership.

It is a small banner Mauser, 4" barrel, Crown U proofed piece, Sn 1591V, a number that falls in Costanzo's list of Swiss guns. I have never seen another like it and it has the standard type Swiss holster, except it is black and made for a 4" P-08.

I purchased the piece for a good deal of money several years ago from a very well known COLLECTOR who thought it may have been used by the Basel Police. He acquired it from a GI who brought it back from W.W.II.

Does anyone on the Forum have knowledge of this particular contract? I do know the V block small banners were the source of the GNR pistols as well as the Siamese contract guns...

Any thoughts?

Hello Tom A.,

I am not sure if this info. helps at all, it is from my Vitorrio Bobba swiss luger book. On pages 132-134 :

1. Mauser swiss contract (1934) lugers in the 3600v to 3900v are indicated. These lugers would have the small Mauser banner until 1935 and large banner after 1935.

2. These lugers would have a small swiss cross on the left side of the barrel, the swiss BP proof mark on the underside of the barrel, and a swiss cross-in-sunburst chamber marking.

3. If you have access to the book, there are some nice photos on pages 132-134. I will try to scan some and add to this message thread.

I have that reference and my interpretation of it is referring to pieces purchased by the Swiss Federation (National Govt). This piece is reported to have come from Basel Police and as such would NOT have been a federation procurement but perhaps one made by the Canton. Any ideas?

Jan Still's "Weimar Lugers" pages 255-257 discusses the Basel Police DWM made M14 Commericals in the 75441-76049 serial range with 9x100mm barrels. The Swiss (Mauser Banner) lugers in the 1300-1920 v suffix range would normally be grip safety models with 7.65x120mm barrels, probably made for the commerical market. (see WOL proofmarks page 409).
